Martin Walserś interpretation of the loving relatonship between Goethe and Ulrike von Lewetzow in the book "Ein liebender Mann" (2008).

Abstract:

This work deals with the topic of Martin Walser?s interpretation of the love relationship between Goethe and Ulrike von Levetzow in the book Ein liebender Mann (2008), [The loving Man]. Martin Walser ranks among the most read writers of the comtemporary German written literature. One of his writer?s area deals with the lovers pairs? age difference and so does the book Ein liebender Mann. The novel is written for the common reader and analyses the relationship between aging Goethe and a very young girl Ulrike von Levetzow. The story takes place in the western Bohemia, especially in the spa of Mariánské Lázně in 1823. Short biographies of main characters and descriptions of their social position are used to help understand the purpose of this work. The main purpose of the work is the analysis and intrpretation of the novel Ein liebender Mann and the comparison to other books or films dealing with the same topic, as well as exploring relevant sights as museums, statues etc. relating to Goethe and Ulrike. In the appendix there are texts as telephone conversation with Martin Walser, readers? survey results, a letter, a poem and photographical documentation relating to this diploma work.

Abstract:

Diese Diplomarbeit war auf das Thema Analyse und Interpretation von Martin Walsers Roman Ein liebender Mann (2008) und auf die Darstellung der Liebesbeziehung Goethes zu Ulrike von Levetzow. Martin Walser gehört zu den meist gelesenen Schriftstellern der gegenwärtigen deutschen Literatur. Unter seine literarischen Themenkreise mit denen er sich befasst gehört auch der gro?e Altersunterschied zwischen Liebespaaren. So ist es auch im Buch Ein liebender Mann. Der Roman ist für die breite Leseöffentlichkeit geschrieben und befasst sich mit der Beziehung des alten J. W. Goethe und der jungen Ulrike von Levetzow. Die Geschichte spielt sich im Jahre 1823 in Westböhmen, vor allem in Marienbad ab. Für das bessere Begreifen des Hauptzieles dieser Diplomarbeit ist es nötig den Lebenslauf der Hauptdarsteller, ihrer Bedeutung in der Gesellschaft, den Einfluss auf die entstehenden Werke usw., darzustellen. Das Ziel dieser Diplomarbeit ist eine Analyse und Interpretation des Romans Ein liebender Mann, dessen Vergleich mit anderen veröffentlichten Büchern oder Filmen zu diesem Thema und die bedeutendsten Gedenkstätten (Museen, Statuen usw.), die sich zu Goethe und Ulrike beziehen, erforschen. Im Anhang befinden sich Texte, wie ein Telefoninterview mit Martin Walser, Auswertung einer Leseumfrage, Goethes Brief, Gedicht und Fotodokumentation die sich zur Diplomarbeit bezieht.
