Relationship Crises in Contemporary Austrian Literature using the examples of Laura Freudenthaler and Xaver Bayer

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis focuses on the analysis of two works from contemporary Austrian literature, namely the novels "Geistergeschichte" by Laura Freudenthaler and "Geschichten mit Marianne" by Xaver Bayer. The aim of the analysis is to clarify and compare to what extent and in what way the crisis of the relationship manifests itself in the mentioned texts and what role the factors of corporeality, perception and play represent here. The first part of the work clarifies and explains these aspects in connection to postmodern literature. The second part of the thesis points to the given factors by focusing on the analysis of specific passages and behaviour of the characters from selected works. In the end, the results of the analysis are compared with the theoretical part with emphasis on the examined relationship crisis in both novels.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na analýzu dvou děl ze současné rakouské literatury, a to romány “Geistergeschichte” od Laury Freudenthaler a “Geschichten mit Marianne” od Xavera Bayera. Analýza má za cíl objasnit a porovnat, do jaké míry a jakým způsobem se v uvedených textech projevuje krize vztahu a jakou roli zde představují faktory tělesnosti, vnímání a hry. První část práce více přibližuje a vysvětluje tyto aspekty v souvislosti s postmoderní literaturou. Druhá část práce na dané faktory poukazuje tím, že se věnuje samotné analýze konkrétních pasáží a chování postav z vybraných děl. V závěru jsou výsledky analýzy porovnány s teoretickou částí s důrazem na zkoumanou krizi vztahu v obou dílech.
