Sieťové systémy sú nevyhnutnou súčasťou prevádzky leteckých spoločností a kritickým aspektom, ktorý definuje stratégiu leteckej spoločnosti. Deregulácia leteckého trhu v Spojených štátoch v roku 1978 výrazne ovplyvnila konfiguráciu siete leteckých spoločností a vývoj konfigurácie siete “hub and spoke” sa považuje za najvýznamnejšiu zmenu spôsobe-nú dereguláciou trhu.
