Conceptions of Humanity in Three Works of Post-Apocalyptic Fiction

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá analýzou jednotlivých zobrazení lidstva a lidskosti ve třech dílech post-apokalyptické fikce, jmenovitě Poslední člověk od Mary Shelley, Rudý Mor od Jacka Londona a Cesta od Cormaca McCarthyho. Práce porovnává jednotlivé přístupy a hodnotí, do jaké míry se v dílech zrcadlí osobní přesvědčení autorů a události či myšlenkové proudy historické doby, ve které žili. Díla jsou interpretována s ohledem na zvláštnosti post-apokalyptické literatury a mimo motivy spojené s životy autorů se tato práce zabývá také motivy typickými pro žánr jako takový, konkrétně tedy konceptem vypravěče post-apokalypsy, falešného proroka a posledního přeživšího. Práce chápe post-apokalyptickou literaturu jako ideální výchozí bod pro studium lidského chování a nakonec i nalezení toho, co činí člověka člověkem.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with different conceptions of humanity in three works of post-apocalyptic fiction, namely Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s The Last Man, The Scarlet Plague by Jack London and The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It aims to compare different approaches of respective authors to determine to what extent were their works influenced by their personal convictions or historical era they lived in. The works are interpreted with regard to the oddities of the genre and besides motifs directly connected to the lives of the authors it also deals with motifs typical for the genre as such, particularly with the concept of post-apocalyptic narrator, false prophet or the only survivor. This thesis sees post-apocalyptic literature as an ideal platform for further study of human behaviour and eventual discovery of the core of humanity, thus what does it truly mean to be human.
