Mapping the Musical Language of Albanian Composers in the Context of European Compositional Style

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá historickým vývojem albánské hudební kultury od starověku do dnešní doby a zkoumá specifické rysy soudobé albánské hudby i individuální komunikativní aspekty hudební řeči současných albánských skladatelů. Z této perspektivy demonstruje, jak hluboce je skladatelská tvorba prostoupena domácími kulturními tradicemi, hudební kulturou dvou hlavních albánských folklorních oblastí Geg (sever) a Tosk (jih), instrumentálními útvary lidových hudebních nástrojů, hudebními i kulturními vlivy zahraniční albánské diaspory a společenskými i politickými událostmi v Evropě 19. a 20. století, které se někdy neočekávaně, ba dokonce paradoxně promítly do samotné povahy albánské soudobé hudby.Metodicky se práce zaměřuje na komplexní analýzu vybraných kompozic předních současných albánských skladatelů. Zkoumání jejich kompozičního stylu a individuální hudební řečí svědčí o tom, že navzdory zřetelným rozdílům ve způsobu práce s hudebním materiálempřed pádem komunismu v roce 1990 a po něm poskytuje albánským skladatelům i nadále cenné podněty – vedle některých soudobých kompozičních technik, které jsou unikátní i v mezinárodním měřítku – albánská národní hudba, a to zejména hudba folklorního typu.Albánským autorům se podařila v posledních třech dekádách pozoruhodná a jedinečná stylová syntéza: jejich hudební řeč je originální a zároveň se zařadila do polystylového kontextu postmoderního směřování evropského hudebního umění. Mezinárodní úspěchy pičkových soudobých skladatelů navíc naznačují skutečnost, že i po letech izolace v období komunistického režimu si albánská hudba získala své místo v mezinárodním hudebním světě.

Abstract:

This dissertation is invested in both a historical consideration of the Albanian musical culture from antiquity to modern days and an examination of specific features of Albanian modern music as depicted by the individual communicative aspects of the musical languageused by contemporary Albanian composers. From this perspective, this research work demonstrates how extensively the musical culture in this area is entangled with a variety of influences ranging from its deep cultural traditions embedded in its music folklore,accompanied by traditional musical instruments specific of the two main geographical distributions Geg (North) and Tosk (South), to the foreign influences coming from the Albanian diaspora during the powerful social and political developments of the 19 th and 20th century in Europe, which influenced, sometimes unexpectedly and even paradoxically, the very nature of the Albanian modern music.Methodologically, the focus of this thesis is on the stylistic analysis of selected compositions by leading contemporary Albanian composers. The examination of their compositional style and individual music language proves that, despite distinct differencesin the way they worked with their music material before the fall of Communism in 1990 and afterwards, the Albanian composers – in addition to some contemporary compositional techniques that are unique even on the international arena – constitute the dominatinginfluence in the Albanian national musical landscape.Over the last three decades Albanian composers have achieved a remarkably unique style synthesis: their musical language is both original and at the same time well-integrated within the polystyle context of the postmodern direction in the European music culture.The international achievements of several acclaimed Albanian contemporary composers also indicate the fact that, even after years of Communist isolation, the Albanian music has earned a place of its own in the international music world.
