Grandparental Role-Meaning in Perception of Grandparents

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou významu role prarodiče. Cílem výzkumu je zmapovat, jak prarodiče vnímají význam své role, konkrétně pak význam role pro generaci vnoučat, rodičů i svůj vlastní život. V teoretické části představujeme sociodemografické trendy ovlivňující charakter prarodičovské role v českém prostředí, charakteristiky období pozdní dospělosti a stáří a vývojového cyklu rodiny v těchto obdobích, perspektivu vývojových období vnoučete a typologii stylů prarodičovství. Uvádíme stručný přehled historie výzkumu v oblasti významu role prarodiče. Pro dosažení výzkumného cíle byl zvolen kvalitativní výzkumný přístup, shromáždili jsme data z osmi polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s muži i ženami v roli prarodičů. Analýza dat proběhla na úrovni fáze otevřeného kódování v metodě zakotvené teorie. Podle výsledků práce vnímají dotazovaní prarodiče svou roli jako významnou a přirozenou součást života vnoučat i svého vlastního a aktivně se v ní angažují podle potřeb obou mladších generací. V prarodiči zmiňovaných tématech se objevuje i problematika diferenciace charakteru a významu role v souvislosti se demografickými trendy v rodině, domníváme se, že další výzkum v této oblasti by byl pro pochopení situace současných prarodičů v její rozmanitosti užitečný. V práci jsou diskutovány také limity výzkumu implikující možnost zvýšené míry angažovanosti v roli u dotazovaných prarodičů.

Abstract:

The study focuses on the meaning of grandparenthood. The aim of the study is a qualitative exploration of how grandparents understand the meaning of their role, concretely the meaning for the grandchildren, their parents and the grandparents themselves. In the theoretical part of the work, we introduce the current social-demographic trends influencing the character of the grandparental role in the Czech Republic, the characteristics of late adulthood and the old age and the development of the family cycle at this stages, the perspective of grandchildren’s developmental stages and the typology of grandparenting styles. The history of research in the area of the meaning of grandparenthood is mentioned. To achieve the goal of the study, we used metods of qualitative research, we collected the data from semi-structured interviews with eight men and women in the grandparental roles. The data were analysed on the first level of the grounded theory. According to the results of the study, the questioned grandparents perceive their role as an important part of the lives of grandchildren and grandparents themselves, and they actively engage in their role according to the needs of both of younger generations. The themes mentioned by grandparents involve also the differentiation of the character and the meaning of the role related to the social-demographic changes in families, we consider further research in this direction as usefull. The limits of the study are discussed, they imply the grandparents in our interviews as being more actively engaged in their role than others.
