V. B. Jestřábský's Stellarium Novum: The Imagery of baroque Marian devotion in Moravia

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá obrazem barokní mariánské zbožnosti na Moravě, jež je zprostředkována textem Stellaria novum katolického kněze a spisovatele Valentina Bernarda Jestřábského. Text vznikl v období vrcholného baroka, proto práce obsahuje základní charakteristiku barokního období, kultury a literatury, kde je zvlášť kladen důraz na nábožensky vzdělávací literaturu, do které je Stellarium řazeno. Následuje kapitola věnující se barokní zbožnosti, náboženským poutím, úctě k Panně Marii a svatým. Pro Jestřábského tvorbu je charakteristická práce s exemplem. Z tohoto důvodu je v teoretické části práce zařazen jeho vývoj s přihlédnutím k proměnám v době baroka. Na základě dochovaných pramenů následuje medailon samotného autora. Z hlediska samotného Stellaria je pozornost věnována Jestřábského práci s exemplem, úctě k Panně Marii a jejímu rozvoji, fenoménu náboženských poutí a autorské strategii. Vše je dokládáno na příkladech citovaných přímo z textu.

Abstract:

This master diploma thesis deals with the reflection of Marian devoutness in Moravia, that is mediated by the text Stellaria novum by the Catholic priest Valentin Bernard Jestřabský. This text originates in the period of the High Baroque and that is why the thesis incorporates a basic characteristic of the Baroque period, culture and literature. In the case of literature, the main focus is on the religious educational literature which includes Stellarium. The following chapter deals with the Baroque devoutness, religious pilgrimages, with devotion to Mary and the saints. For the writings of Jestřabský is typical his work with exempla. For this reason there is his development with regard to the transformation in the Baroque period included in the theoretical part of the thesis. Based on the surviving sources there follows a portrait of the author himself. In terms of Stellarium, attention is paid to Jestřábský’s work with exemplum, devotion to Mary and its development, the phenomenon of religious pilgrimages and to the authorial strategy. Everything is supported with the examples cited directly from the text.
