Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina - Two Misunderstood Hearts

Abstract:

The goal of this bachelor thesis is to compare two heroines of realism: Emma Bovary by Gustave Flaubert and Anna Karenina by Leo N. Tolstoy. In the theoretical part we focus on the narrative and the literary personnage, firstly its characterisation and then the typology. After the outline of the method of analysis we describe the particular works: the authors, the plot, themes and motives, and the characterisation of both heroines, while the emphasis is layed on their appearance, character, surroundings and relations. In the final part, we firstly compare both works in general, then their narratives, themes and motives, and eventually both heroines.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce si klade za cíl porovnání dvou hrdinek světového realismu: Emmy Bovaryové od Gustava Flauberta a Anny Kareniny od Lva N. Tolstého. V teoretické části je věnována pozornost narativu a literární postavě, nejprve charakterizaci a poté typologii postav. Po nastínění metody analýzy jsou v praktické části popsána jednotlivá díla: autoři, děj, témata a motivy, a charakterizace obou hrdinek, přičemž je důraz kladen na jejich vzhled, charakter, prostředí a vztahy. V poslední části se práce věnuje komparaci, nejdříve obou děl obecně, dále narace, témat a motivů, a konečně porovnání obou hrdinek.
