Analysis of relationships and among characteristics and various forms of maladaptive and adaptive behavior in people under emotional pressure

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je součástí široce zaměřeného výzkumného projektu Centra pro komplexní psychologický výzkum stresu, který je postaven na týmové spolupráci deseti studentů Psychologického ústavu Masarykovy univerzity. Společným cílem naší práce je detailní analýza působení stresu u tzv. pomáhajících profesí (konkrétně zaměstnání v rámci vězeňské služby). Teoretická část se zaměřuje na různé maladaptivní a adaptivní formy chování osobnosti v kontextu emocionality pod vlivem stresu. Empirická části je věnovaná analýze vztahu vybraných osobnostních komponent měřených osobnostními dotazníky ICL (Interpersonal Check List) T. Learyho a Gordonovým osobnostním profilem – Inventorium (GPP-I ) a míře ostrahy vybraných věznic. Z většího množství hypotéz se potvrdily statisticky významné rozdíly mezi zaměstnanci pracujícími ve věznici s ostrahou a věznici se zvýšenou ostrahou v míře autokratičnosti a dominance. Dozorci a vychovatelé přísněji střežených věznic vykazují vyšší míru těchto osobnostních charakteristik. Další statisticky významné rozdíly byly zjištěny v míře podezřívavosti a afiliace. U pracovníků ve věznici s ostrahou se projevila vyšší míra podezíravosti než ve vazební věznici a ve vazební věznici se vyskytla statisticky významně vyšší míra afiliace než ve věznici s ostrahou.

Abstract:

This master thesis is a part of a broader research project of the Centre for Complex Studies of Stress, which is based on the work of ten students from the School of Psychology at Masaryk University. The overall goal was to analyse the impact of stress on members of helping professions, in general, and prison guards, in particular. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on various maladaptive and adaptive forms of behaviour under stress. The empirical part of this thesis analyses the correlations between the level of prison security and the personality characteristics of its guards, as measured by the Interpersonal Check List of Leary and Inventorium GPP-I of Gordon. Out of a number of hypotheses, it was shown that there are significant correlations between: * Autocratism and dominance and the level of security of the prison. Guards in high security prisons have significantly higher levels of autocratism and dominance than guards in minimum security prisons. * Affiliation and suspiciousness and the level of security of the prison. Guards even in minimum security prisons have significantly higher levels of suspiciousness and significantly lower level of affiliation than guards in remand prisons.
