Comparison of Religion as a Feature of Social Criticism in Folk Lyrics in the USA and Czechoslovakia

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývala analýzou náboženství jako prvku sociální kritiky ve folkových textech Ameriky a Československa a jejím cílem bylo srovnání využívání těchto prvků na základě společenských rozdílů mezi zmíněnými státy ve zkoumaném období. První kapitola práce se věnuje teoretickému vstupu k folkové písni, zejména její sociálně-kritické povaze. Druhá kapitola se zaměřuje na americký kontext, předkládá stručný popis kulturního pozadí a představuje úlohu, kterou v tehdejší společnosti folková píseň hrála. Další část kapitoly sestává z analýzy třech vybraných folkových textů: „It´s Alright, Ma (I´m only bleeding)“ od Boba Dylana, „Mercedes Benz“ Janis Joplinové a „American Pie“ Dona McLeana. Třetí kapitola se obdobným způsobem zabývá československým kulturním prostředím a analyzuje texty „Haleluja“ Jaromíra Nohavicu, „Pieta“ Karla Kryla a „Konfident Páně“ Jiřího Dědečka. Závěr pak obsahuje porovnání těchto dvou situací a ukazuje, jakým způsobem rozlišná společenská zřízení ovlivnila využívání náboženských prvků jako nástroj sociální kritiky.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the use of elements of religion as a tool of social criticism in folk lyrics of the USA and Czechoslovakia and its aim was to compare the use of these elements on the basis of cultural differences in the two countries in the chosen era. The first chapter deals with a theoretical introduction to folk songs, mainly with its social critical character. The second chapter focuses on the American context, it offers a brief sketch of cultural background and it introduces the role that folk songs played at the time. The next part of this chapter analyzes three chosen lyrics by American songwriters: “It´s Alright, Ma ( I´m Only Bleeding)” by Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin´s “Mercedes Benz” and “American Pie” written by Don McLean. The third chapter deals with the Czech context similarly. It analyzes the lyrics “Haleluja” by Jaromír Nohavica, “Pieta” by Karel Kryl and “Konfident Páně” Jiřího Dědečka. The last section of the thesis, its conclusion, sums up outcomes of the analyses, compares their results and it shows how the cultural differences influenced the usage of religious elements as a tool of social critique.
