The Influence of European Art on Chinese Painting in First Half of 20th century

Abstract:

První část bakalářské práce stručně popisuje vývoj historie čínského malířství od nejstaršího období až do doby dynastie Ming. V hlavní části práce je rozebrán vývoj umění na konci 19. století a v 1. polovině 20. století, kdy čínské malíře ovlivnilo evropské malířství. Práce řeší, jakým způsobem ovlivnily umění reformy z období Sta dní reforem a později Májové hnutí, jaký vliv měly myšlenky Kang Youweie, jak se tehdejší malíři lišili od starého čínského malířství a jaký byl jejich postoj k domácí tradici a evropskému umění. Poslední kapitola se věnuje dvou konkrétním případům – malířům Lin Fengmianovi, zastánci moderních evropských malířských technik a Xu Beihongovi, zastánci evropského akademického realismu. Výsledkem práce je odpověď na otázku, do jaké míry byly v procesu modernizace čínského umění důležité reformy a poslední řadě srovnání moderních přístupů dvou výše zmíněných autorů.

Abstract:

First chapter of the bachelor thesis briefly describes development of Chinese paintings, from the early times to the Ming dynasty. The main part focuses on the end of 19th century and first half of the 20th century, when Chinese painter were affected by European paintings. The bachelor thesis tries to explain how the ideas of Hundred Day’s Reform and the May Fourth Movement and ideas of Kan Youwei influenced Chinese art, how were the Chinese painter from late 19th and early 20th century different from old Chinese painters and what was their attitude toward the Chinese traditional painting and toward the European painting. The last part of the bachelor thesis focuses on two examples of what is called modern Chinese art – Lin Fengmian, protagonist of modern European painting techniques and Xu Beihong, the protagonist of European academic realism. The result of the thesis is answer to question how were the ideas of reform movements important in the process of modernizing Chinese art and also the comparison of the modern styles of the two painters motioned above.
