Differentiating aspects of other dimension and archetype of hero in the Czech phantasy literature

Abstract:

Od devadesátých let se začalo vydávat nepřeberné množství fantasy literatury určené českým čtenářům. K jejímu zpopularizování přispěla tvorba J. R. R. Tolkiena a především filmové zpracování Pána prstenů. Výrazný vývoj české fantasy začal až ke konci 20. století, kdy se čeští autoři vymanili z vlivu zahraniční nadprodukce fantasy literatury a čím dál větší část autorů si nachází cestu k českému čtenáři. Tvorba fantasy literatury se vyznačuje různorodou kvalitou, významný podíl tvoří populární a masmediální kultura, která zahrnuje především film, televizi, počítačové, stolní hry a tzv. LARPy . V celkové nadprodukci tvoří čeští autoři jen malou část a prostor k publikování dostávají zejména v časopisech, kde začínající autoři soutěží o nejlepší povídky. Vítězové mají šanci vydat vlastní knihu. . V původní české tvorbě převažuje žánrová konvence, autoři zaměřují svou tvorbu na alternace známějších světových děl. Vděčným tématem bývají adaptace starých českých pověstí, zejména doba praotce Čecha a knížete Přemysla. Počátkem 90. let autoři hledali inspiraci v anglosaském proudu fantasy literatury, zejména byl poznat silný vliv J. R. R. Tolkiena. Současný trend směřuje více k tzv. slovanským vlivům, silná je inspirace Andrejem Sapkowským, nejvýraznějším autorem tzv. východního proudu fantasy literatury. Většina vydané fantasy literatury podléhá komerční atraktivnosti, má svou pevnou a věrnou spotřebitelskou skupinu a stojí na okraji zájmu kritické veřejnost. Na českou fantasy a tvorbu českých autorů se v současné době monotématicky nezaměřuje žádná vědecká publikace. Mezi kritiky a recenzenty patří samotní spisovatelé, kteří jsou součástí redakce dvou nejznámějších časopisů Ikarie a Pevnosti, které se fantastikou zabývají. Hodnocení tvorby se objevuje sporadicky u vydavatelů antologií, reflexí české fantastické tvorby se ve svých publikacích věnuje malá část vědecky zaměřených publicistů. V první části jsem se zaměřila na stanovení elementárních aspektů fantasy literatury s vymezením české produkce fantasy literatury. Sleduji zde aspekty tvorby jednotlivých autorů a pokusila jsem se charakterizovat společný rys a vývojové tendence v české fantasy literatuře s přihlédnutím na kořeny inspirace. Druhou část práce se soustřeďuje na archetyp hrdiny v různých fázích socializace a přihlíží zejména k vývojovým fázím, k hledání vlastního sebe- pojetí a přijetí předurčené role.

Abstract:

This diploma work should in a simplified form depict my point of view on some aspects of fantasy literature, on penetration of fantasy with other genres and introduce briefly an archetype of the hero. Fantasy literature could be determined as a literary writing which creates an image of reality by using imaginative components. Fantasy literature is composed of stories that take place in fantastic, imaginary worlds or in our past. The essential feature of fantasy literature is often an inexplicable, unreal or even supernatural phenomenon. Roots of fantasy literature can be found in folklore (above all in myths and fairy-tales) and also in antique and medieval literature. Nowadays the term fantasy refers to all fantasy literature without respect to genre. Concerning English speaking countries and especially in particular areas of commercial field we use specific terminology, such as Sword and Sorcery, Heroic fantasy, which comes out from heroic myth, and High fantasy, which has emerged in medieval legends. We can differentiate fantasy literature in many ways; we can meet Science fantasy, Fantasy fairy-tale, History Fantasy, Detective fantasy and so on. Anglo-Saxons who have been founders of modern fantasy literature are nowadays still dominant in the world of fantasy. They found an archetype which is strongly attached to their culture. It is the myth of Arthur which has become a prototype of all fantasy works in the Anglo-Saxon area and it is a primary source and inspiration until nowadays. Writers tend to classical legends and its characters ? Merlin, King Arthur, Tristan and Isolde, lorn Atlantide, prince Rohan etc. Correspondence with original inspiration lead fantasy to cliché formed with quest. There can be found a various range of artistic duality in fantasy literature. We can find here really original, valuable writings and trivial, trashy works, too. This type of literature respects established convection, norms, genre prototypes and stereotypes which are required by the recipient. A certain convention and compositional stereotype are respected here. The fact that Czech and Slovakian fantasy is very successful is evident from its spreading across the border. Miroslav Zamboch, Frantisek Novotny, Alexandra Pavelkova and Dusan D. Fabian asserted themselves in Poland. Slovak author Juraj Cervenak?s short story She Was Born from Holy Water was published in reinstated American magazine The Weird Tales. According to the new trend we can guess that the demand of Slavic fantasy will still increase both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Fantasy literature crystallized as a separate genre in Anglo-Saxon world in the sixtieth years of the twentieth century. During that time the archetype of hero has appeared in innumerable and not receivable forms. Therefore we can find here some uniting elements - simplified plural and a certain pattern which we can apply to Anglo-Saxon prototype of hero. In general, heroes have to overcome or avail their negative qualities which tie them down. They have to step by step find in their minds the opposite, positive power that will get over their weak points and their own individuality. The most typical prototype of hero that has appeared in the Czech fantasy literature is the solitaire type. Czech hero is not at all perfect, he is not at all unbeatable, he has got many weaknesses and he has got many questions about himself and his mission. And for his vulnerability and being ordinary it is quite easy for the recipient to identify with him. Typical fantasy hero has to walk a long way to manage troubles. And the most difficult one is to discover his own self before he gets to the end. And that is why the fantasy hero can have an important and tangible influence on fantasy literature readers, on their decisions and dealing with their life difficulties.
