The Concept of Women in the Middle Ages

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá pojetím ženy ve středověku, a to zejména ve dvanáctém století. Práce nejprve objasňuje, jaká měla žena v tomto období politická práva, kde se mohla společensky pohybovat, jak byla vnímána její sexualita, manželská a mateřská role a snaží se najít vysvětlení těchto postojů v křesťanském náboženství. Poté je práce zaměřena na postavu myslitelky Heloisy z Argenteuil, která žila ve dvanáctém století ve Francii. V textu je stručně představen její život, vztah s filosofem Petrem Abélardem a dobová svědectví o její osobnosti. Posléze práce uvádí, jak je nám Heloisa prezentována v akademické literatuře, v populární kultuře a věnuje se analýze korespondence mezi ní a Abélardem. Na závěr se práce pokouší o plastické vykreslení a interpretaci této myslitelky.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with the concept of a medieval woman, particulary in the twelfth century. First, it explains what political rights a woman had in those times, what was her position in society, her sexuality and matrimonial role perceived. Moreover, the paper also tries to find the explanations for these positions in the Christian religion. Second, the thesis focuses on the character of the thinker Heloise of Argenteuil, who lived in the twelfth century in France. The text briefly introduces her life, her relationship with the philosopher Petr Abelard and some evidences and opinions about her from the twelfth century. Additionally, the thesis presents Heloise in the academic literature, in the pop culture and analyses the correspondence between her and Abelard. Finally, the thesis tries to offer an overall interpretation of her.
