The position of the Republic of Zambia in Southern African market and development of its integration

Abstract:

The development of Zambia’s foreign trade has gone through many changes, but the greatest changes started being made in 1991. From this time Zambia’s trade has dramatically improved. In this paper I will focus on the period between 2000 and 2008 as this is the time when the changes have mostly been implemented. From 2005, Zambia’s foreign trade both exports and imports have reached high heights. During this period the country has signed a lot of trade agreements both at regional (SADC and COMESA) and inter-regional levels. The project aim is to show how Zambia’s exports and imports have grown under the review period. Among the focus questions addressed are the following: What is Zambia’s trade situation like? What are the main protocols that country has so far ratified and implanted? Is there a linkage between foreign trade and economic growth? How important is South Africa to Zambia’s foreign trade? Furthermore the paper sought to define clearly Zambia’s trade performance within the main SADC integration grouping to which Zambia is a member state.The main conclusions drawn from this research are that: first, Zambia’s trade has positively improved from the year 2005 till now. This will be seen and explained as from this year Zambia has been recording trade surplus compared to previous years when the country experienced huge trade deficits. Secondly, Zambia’s main trading product copper and other mineral resources. Thirdly, Zambia’s comparative or competitive advantage in the non-traditional exports (NTEs) lies mainly in the agriculture sector. Fourthly, South Africa is likely to remain Zambia’s main trading partner irrespective of how exports to that country have reduced.Further, the paper recommends that there is urgent need to lobby for fair trade if Zambia’s foreign trade is to greatly benefit the growth of the economy. In this vein, there is need for closer cooperation among government, civil society organizations and other non-state actors. The paper further recommends the need to diversify Zambia’s economy by realizing that Zambia’s foreign trade potential lies in agriculture sector as copper prices are never stable.
