Quantum-mechanical analysis of phases containing tin and lead

Abstract:

V rámci této práce byla provedena ab initio analýza čistého alfa, beta a gama cínu, čistého fcc olova, metastabilních strukturně příbuzných alfa, beta a gama struktur obsahující cín a olovo v koncentračním rozsahu 3,13 až 25 at. % olova (pro gama struktury 3,13 až 21,88 at. % Pb) a struktur popsaných ve článcích autorů R. Sarode (Metastable solid-solutions in lead-tin alloys. Current Science. 1974, 43, 339-339) označené jako SST struktury v koncentračním rozsahu 25,00-37,50 at. % olova a R. Kane (New metastable phases in binary tin alloy systems. Acta Metallurgica. 1966, 14, 605-609) označené Pb0,26Sn0,74 o koncentraci olova 31,25 at. %. Byly nalezeny rovnovážné mřížkové parametry alfa-, beta- i gama Sn a fcc Pb. Zbylá strukturní data byla popsána lineární regresí v závislosti na molárním zlomku olova. Tvorná tepla vztažená ke standardním stavům prvků jsou pro všechny studované fáze kladná. Závislost tvorných tepel na molárním zlomku olova byla popsána pomocí lineární regrese. Fononová spektra čistého cínu a nejstabilnějších alfa, beta a gama struktur o koncentraci 6,25 at. % olova nevykazovala významné známky nestability. Pomocí harmonické aproximace byly extrapolovány energie alfa, beta a gama cínu k vyšším teplotám a byl určen bod stabilizace beta-Sn vůči gama-Sn a beta-Sn vůči alfa-Sn. Dále byla tato analýza rozšířena o kvazi-harmonickou aproximaci. Byla určena pro-storová grupa rovnovážných SST struktur a struktury Pb0,26Sn0,74. Experimentálně se nepodařilo syntetizovat metastabilní struktury ani pomocí metody splat cooling a zopakovat tak výsledky článků autorů R. Sarode a R. Kane. Experimentální vzorky byly analyzovány pomocí rentgenové difrakce a prokázali přítomnost beta-Sn.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with ab initio analysis of pure alpha, beta and gamma tin, pure fcc lead, metastable structures structurally related to alpha, beta and gamma structures with lead concentration ranging from 3.13 to 25 at. % (for gamma structures from 3.13 to 21.88 at. %) and structures described in articles by R. Sarode (Metastable solid-solutions in lead-tin alloys. Current Science. 1974, 43, 339-339) labelled as SST structures with a lead concentration range from 25 to 37.50 at. % and by R. Kane (New metastable phases in binary tin alloy systems. Acta Metallurgica. 1966, 14, 605-609) labelled Pb0.26Sn0.74 with lead concentration 31.25 at. %. The equilibrium lattice parameters were found for alpha-, beta- and gamma Sn and fcc Pb. The struc-tural data of alpha, beta and gamma structures were described by linear regression of lattice parameters dependence on lead molar fraction. The heats of formation of analysed structures related to the pure elements in the standard state are positive for all analysed structures. Dependencies of the heats of formation on the lead mo-lar fraction were described by linear regression. The phonon spectra of pure tin and the most stable alpha, beta and gamma structures with lead concentration 6.25 at. % did not reveal significant imaginary vibration frequencies. The energies of pure alpha, beta and gamma tin were extrapolated to higher temperatures using harmonic approximation. This analysis shows the stabilization of beta tin compared to gamma tin and beta tin compared to alpha tin. This analysis was extended by quasi-harmonic approximation. The space group of the SST structures and Pb0,26Sn0,74 was identified. Our experiment to synthesize metastable structure failed despite using the splat cooling method. Our experimental samples were ana-lysed by X-ray diffraction method which showed the presence of beta-Sn.
