Effect of density of plant individuals on diversity of forest vegetation

Abstract:

Soupis rostlinných druhů na ploše o určité velikosti patří mezi běžné způsoby, jak popsat diverzitu rostlinných společenstev. Poněvadž jsme jen stěží schopni zachytit celkovou šíři diverzity zkoumaných společenstev, poskytují jednotlivé vegetační zápisy zpravidla jen neúplnou představu o celkové diverzitě vegetace. V případě porovnávání různě bohatých vegetačních typů na základě vzorků standardizovaných na plochu tak může docházet k nepřesným závěrům o jejich relativní bohatosti. Tento způsob standardizace totiž nezohledňuje fakt, že se na ploše o určité velikosti může vyskytovat výrazně různý počet rostlinných jedinců. Porost s větším počtem jedinců na plochu přirozeně nese potenciál poskytovat útočiště většímu počtu druhů, nežli porost výrazně řidší. V porostech s vyšší koncentrací jedinců však nutno také zvážit větší pravděpodobnost výskytu mezidruhových interakcí, a tedy vyšší riziko zániku populací konkurenčně slabších druhů. V předložené práci prezentuji výsledky srovnání diverzity šesti vybraných bylinných podrostů středoevropských přirozených a polopřirozených lesů. Jednotlivé typy vegetace srovnávám na základě tří různých typů vzorků: 1) pomocí vegetačního zápisu na ploše o určité velikosti, 2) vzorkem o určitém počtu rostlinných jedinců, a 3) pomocí vzorku o stejné sample coverage (což je míra, jež značí, jaký podíl z celkového počtu jedinců ve společenstvu přísluší druhům, které daný vzorek obsahuje). Z výsledků vyplývá, že porosty s nižší hustotou rostlinných jedinců nejsou klasickým vegetačním zápisem zachyceny zdaleka tak kompletně jako porosty s vyšším počtem jedinců.

Abstract:

Common way how to describe diversity of plant communities is recording species from the area of given size. Since we are hardly able to capture whole diversity of the communities investigated, such records are usually incomplete. When comparing communities differing by species richness using the sample of given area, it can lead to incorrect conclusions about their relative richness. This way of sample standardization ignores the fact that there are communities differing by the number of individuals. Plant community with higher density of individuals carries the potential of containing a greater number of species than community with lower plant individual density. In the stands with a higher number of individuals we must also consider the higher probability of species interactions, and thus a higher chance of extinction of populations competitively weaker species. In my thesis I present the results of comparing the diversity of understory of six plant communities of natural and seminatural Central European forests. The selected vegetation types are compared using different ways of sample standardization: 1) by area (i.e. equally large vegetation plots), 2) by number of individuals, and 3) by sample coverage (a measure indicating the proportion of the total number of individuals in a community belonging to the species represented in the sample). The results show the samples of plant communities with limited number of individuals are usually way more incomplete than the samples of communities with greater number of plant individuals.
