John Cage: Imaginary Landscape No. 4 - Analysis of the composition and view at it as an unconventional form of radioart

Abstract:

John Cage byl jednou z nejvlivnějších osobností experimentální hudby minulého století. Jeho tendence tvořit hudbu jinak , jeho fascinace tichem a náhodou, vycházeli především z manifestů jeho předchůdců, jako byly futuristé nebo Musique Concréte, ale především z inspirace východní filozofie. On sám se stal umělcem, z jehož tvorby vycházeli další umělci. Jeho Imagynary Landscape No. 4 je čtvrtou skladbou ze série pěti skladeb stejného názvu, které John Cage vytvořil během let 1939-1952 a je jednou z prvních, kde byla využita náhoda jako princip pro komponování. Jedná se o skladbu, kde je využito 12 radiových přijímačů a prezentována byla jako koncert. V této práci se podíváme na tuto skladbu podrobněji, jak ji lze chápat, a že je možné se na ni dívat jako na druh radioartové skladby. Na dílo Johna Cage se pohlíží vždy spíše z komplexního pohledu experimentální hudby, proto bude zajímavé ukázat si, jak může být funkční i v jiném hudebním oboru jako je radioart.

Abstract:

John Cage was one of the most influential figures of experimental music of the last century. His tendency create different music, his fascination with silence and chance, this thought come out of the manifests of his predecessors, like the futurists and musique concréte, but also inspiration from Eastern philosophy. He became an artist whose work has inspired other artists. His Imaginary Landscape No. 4 is the fourth song from the series of five pieces of the same named piece created by John Cage during the years 1939-1952 and is one of the first which was used as a coincidence principle for composing. This is a track where it is used 12 radio receivers and was presented as a concert. In this paper we look at this piece in detail, how it can be understood and that it is possible to look at it as a kind of radioart piece. On the work of John Cage is seen always more complex view of experimental music, so it will be interesting to show how it may be functional in another musical field as radioart.
