Trotulla and Medical School of Salerno in the Context of Medieval Medicine

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou středověké lékařské školy v oblasti Salerna. Podstatou textu bylo stanovit, v jaké míře vycházelo salernské učení z tradic antiky a arabského světa. Na základě analýzy kompendia Trotula, bylo prokázáno, že salernští učenci čerpali z lékařských zdrojů, které jejich škole předcházely, tj. zvláště z učení Hippokrata a jeho následovníků. Vycházeli také ze spisů arabské medicíny, která byla západní Evropě zprostředkovaná pomocí překladů islámsko-arabských děl. Práce rovněž potvrdila, že v kontextu salernské školy, vykonávaly lékařské umění vedle mužů také ženy. Nejvlivnější mezi nimi byla Trota de Ruggiero.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the problems of the medieval medical school in the area of Salerno. The essence of the text is to determinate the extent to which issue teaching of Salerno from the traditions of the antiquity and the Arab world. The analysis of the Trotula proved, that the salernist scholars were based on the medical resources, that their school had preceded, particularly from the doctrine of Hippocrates and his disciples. They also came out from the texts of Arab medicine, which was mediated by translations of Arab-Islamic works to Western European. The thesis also confirmed, that in the context of schola medica salernitana, women also practiced medical art next to men. The most influential among them was Trota de Ruggiero.
