Jane Eyre Retellings in Contemporary Fiction

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je analyzovat přetrvávající popularitu knižních převyprávění románu Jana Eyrová s cílem zjistit, jestli přinášejí do diskuse něco nového, nebo jestli jsou jen pouhými vedlejšími produkty nostalgie. K dosažení tohoto cíle byly vybrány dvě velmi odlišné převyprávění Jany Eyrové: Jane Steele od Lyndsay Faye a Re Jane od Patricii Park. První část práce se zabývá analýzou románu Jana Eyrová a její popularity v moderní době, zatímco druhá část analyzuje dva vybrané texty, a to ze dvou velmi rozdílných úhlů pohledu: zobrazení ženských postav a problematika jinakosti (“the other”). Hlavním cílem této diplomové práce je dokázat, že převyprávění Jany Eyrové jsou mnohem víc než jen nekreativní odvozeniny, jejichž jediným přínosem je pobavení čtenáře. Převyprávění Jany Eyrové jsou důležité, protože nabízejí nové úhly pohledu na původní román od Charlotte Brontëové, který buď kritizují, nebo vyzdvihují, čímž svým způsobem reflektují nálady v naši současné společnosti.

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the appeal of Jane Eyre rewritings with the view of determining whether they bring something new to the discussion, or whether they are mere byproducts of nostalgia. To achieve this aim, two very different Jane Eyre rewritings have been selected: Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye and Re Jane by Patricia Park. The first part of the paper sets out to analyse Jane Eyre and its appeal in modern times, whereas the second part analyses the two selected texts from two very different angles: first, the portrayal of women and, second, the depiction of “the other”. In conclusion, the main aim of the thesis is to prove that Jane Eyre rewritings are, indeed, more than just mindless spin-offs whose sole value lies in entertainment. By providing new ways of looking at Charlotte Brontë’s magnus opus, Jane Eyre rewritings either subvert or affirm it, and by doing so, they teach us more about our society than may be immediately apparent.
