Great Britain and the Carlist War

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá postojem Velké Británie k první karlistické válce, jež probíhala ve Španělsku mezi lety 1833 a 1839/40. Karlistické války nelze chápat pouze jako dynastický spor, jenž nastal po smrti Krále Ferdinanda VII. V době své smrti neměl mužského potomka, a proto Pragmatickou sankcí z roku 1830 zajistil nástupnictví pro svou nezletilou dceru Isabelu. Jeho bratr Don Carlos se s tímto stanoviskem nikdy nesmířil a po Ferdinandově smrti se rozpoutala válka, ve které na jedné straně bojovali Carlosovo následovníci, takzvaní karlisté a na straně druhé vojsko ústřední regentské vlády, v jejíž čele stanula královna vdova Marie Kristýna. Tento boj o trůn lze vnímat pouze jako částečnou příčinu konfliktu, neboť jeho širší souvislosti spadají do liberálně-konzervativního boje, jenž probíhal po celé Evropě. Z toho důvodu první karlistická válka vzbudila zájem Velké Británie, jež nakonec iniciovala vznik Alianci čtyř. Společně s Francií, Španělskem a Portugalskem vytvořili spojenectví, jež mělo nejen uklidit občanské války na Pyrenejském poloostrově, ale i vytvořit adekvátní protiváhu konzervativních mocností v evropském prostoru.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the post of Great Britain at the First Carlist War that takes place in Spain between 1833 and 1839/40. The Carlist War cannot be seen solely as a dynastic dispute that arose after the death of King Ferdinand VII. At the time of his death he had no male offspring, and therefore a pragmatic sanction of 1830 secured succession for his underage daughter Isabella. His brother, Don Carlos, never reconciled himself to this position, and after Ferdinand's death a war was waged in which Carlos's followers, the so-called Carlists, fought on the one side, and, on the other, an army of central Regent government headed by Queen widow Maria Cristina. This struggle for the throne can only be seen as a partial cause of conflict, because its wider context falls within the liberal-conservative struggle that has taken place throughout Europe. For this reason, first Carlist War aroused interest of Great Britain, which eventually initiating the formation of the Quadruple Treaty. Together with France, Spain and Portugal, they formed an alliance designed not only to clean up the civil wars on the Iberian Peninsula, but also to create an adequate counterbalance to the conservative powers in the European area.
