Comparison of the Structure of Xylem Petioles and Branches in European Mistletoe (Viscum album) and Its Host Small-leaved Linden (Tilia cordata)

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vztahem mezi poloparazitem jmelím bílým (Viscum album L.) a jeho hostitelem lípou srdčitou (Tilia cordata Mill.). Vlastní výzkum byl zaměřen na vyhodnocení struktury xylému řapíků a letorostů jmelí a jeho hostitele za účelem pochopení hydraulické architektury obou druhů. Bylo zjištěno, že na úrovni řapíků je velikost cév a teoretická hydraulická vodivost u obou druhů stejná. Nicméně, Huber value a specifická hydraulická vodivost listoví byla u řapíků jmelí vyšší než u lípy. To znamená, že jmelí, na rozdíl od lípy, vynakládá více energie do struktury xylému řapíku v porovnání s listovou plochou, kterou zásobuje vodou. Na úrovni letorostů bylo zjištěno, že jmelí dosahuje u většiny sledovaných parametrů struktury xylému menších hodnot, než tomu bylo u lípy. Tyto výsledky jsou zajímavé vzhledem k tomu, že se obecně udává několikanásobně vyšší transpirace u poloparazita než u jeho hostitele. Zjištěná hydraulická architektura jmelí a jeho hostitele ukazuje, že hlavní příčinou vyšší transpirace jmelí nejsou větší cévy, ale schopnosti tolerovat nízký vodní potenciál v kombinaci s faktem, že hemiparazit uzavírá průduchy při stresu nedostatkem vody mnohem později než jeho hostitel. Tyto informace nám pomohou lépe pochopit vzájemný vztah poloparazit-hostitel, díky čemuž se můžeme pokusit omezit šíření jmelí bílého a zmírnit dopady jeho rychlé expanze po území střední Evropy.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with interactions between the hemiparasite European mistletoe (Viscum album L.) and its host small-leaved linden (Tilia cordata Mill.). The research itself was focused on analysis of petioles and annual shoots xylem structure of the mistletoe and its host in order to improve our understanding of the hydraulic architecture of both species. It was found out that on the level of the petioles, the vessel size and the theoretical hydraulic conductivity is the same by both of the species. However, Huber value and specific hydraulic conduction of the mistletoe petioles was higher than that of the linden petioles. It means that mistletoe, unlike linden, invests more energy into petioles xylem structure compared to the leaf area which it provides with water. On the level of the annual shoots it was discovered that mistletoe reaches by most of the monitored xylem structure parameters lower values than linden. Such results are interesting since it is generally declared that the hemiparasite has several times higher transpiration than its host. Detected hydraulic architecture of both the mistletoe and the host shows that the main case of the mistletoe’s higher transpiration are not wider vessels, but its ability to tolerate low water potential combined with the fact that when the hemiparasite is stressed by lack of water, it closes its stomata much later than the host. These information will help us to better undrestand the mutual hemiparasite-host interactions so we can try to limit the spread of the European mistletoe and reduce the impact of its rapid expansion throughout the whole of Central Europe.
