The Fortification system of Pohansko near Břeclav

Abstract:

Analýza raně středověkého opevnění Pohanska u Břeclavi je založena na výsledcích výzkumů prováděných na lokalitě od roku 1958. Do dnešního dne bylo prozkoumáno celkem 19 řezů destrukce opevnění, ze kterých pochází obsáhlá terénní dokumentace rozdílné kvality a tím i vypovídací hodnoty. Již od prvních výzkumů byl průběžně vytvářen model konstrukce opevnění Pohanska, který byl validován dalšími novými výzkumy a také publikován. Ke kompletnímu vyhodnocení však nedošlo z důvodů obsáhlosti dokumentace a složitosti terénní situace. Při průměrné šířce jednoho řezu pět metrů je prozkoumaná část destrukce opevnění, které má celkovou délku 1,9 km, minimální. Moderní výpočetní technika (databáze, geografické informační systémy) umožňuje kombinovat a rychle vyhodnocovat data rozdílné povahy a kvality. Díky tomu bylo možné prostorově identifikovat základní konstrukční prvky a finálně vytvořit nový model konstrukce opevnění a problémy spojené s výstavbou, údržbou, obranou a zánikem hradby. Hradba byla postavena na zarovnaném původním povrchu (mladší subfosilní horizont). Sestává z několika základních konstrukčních prvků: základového roštu, čelní kamenné zdi, týlní dřevěné stěny a násypu z hlíny a jílu. Všechny prvky byly spojeny a byla tak zajištěna stabilita hradby. Šířka hradby byla 6,5 m a její výška dosahovala 3 m bez palisády na jejím vrcholu. Vstup na vrchol hradby byl zajištěn tunelovitými vstupy, které se podařilo zachytit pravděpodobně ve dvou, jistě v jednom případě. Vstup do opevněného areálu zajišťovaly brány. Z nich byla prozatím prozkoumána pouze jedna – východní brána. Podařilo se najít i železné kování vrat. Stavební materiál hradby je dřevo, zemina a kámen. První dvě položky se nacházejí v blízkém okolí lokality, poslední položka musela být dovážena z prostoru Holíče nebo Skalice. To dokládá vysoké organizační možnosti společnosti, které se mimo jiné projevily i ve vlastní výstavbě Pohanska a jeho opevnění. Doba výstavby hradby včetně transportu surovin nemohla ze strategického hlediska trvat příliš dlouhou dobu. Odhadnout dobu potřebnou k realizaci je velmi obtížné a výsledné údaje se všeobecně pohybují ve velmi širokém rozpětí 1 roku až 6 let. Objev palisádového žlabu pod hradbou je pravděpodobným dokladem vícefázové výstavby opevnění. Je tak velmi pravděpodobné, že hradba byla postavena nejprve na nejvíc ohrožených místech a z důvodu nedostatku času nebo stavebního materiálu, popřípadě obojího, byla část lokality nejprve opevněna jednodušší palisádou. V okamžiku, kdy bylo možné pokračovat ve výstavbě hradby byla palisáda vytrhána a nad jejím základem, žlabem, postavena hradba. V tom případě je velmi pravděpodobné, že hradba byla postavena v průběhu dvou, maximálně tří let. Problematické je stále datování výstavby a zániku hradby. Na základě kombinace dendrochronologických analýz zuhelnatělých kusů z konstrukce hradby a vnitřní zástavby, která koresponduje s hradbou, byla hradba postavena někdy po roce 881. Doba zániku hradby nebyla doposud bezpečně vyřešena. Víme, že hradba zanikla požárem. Kdy a kdo způsobil požár nevíme. Domníváme se, že se tak stalo po zániku systému, který podmínil výstavbu Pohanska a hradby. Výzkum hradby nemůžeme považovat za uzavřený. Je nezbytné provést revizní výzkumy starších odkryvů a výzkumy nové na těch úsecích, které doposud nebyly prozkoumány. Výstavba fortifikace Pohanska u Břeclavi byla organizačně složitá a náročná akce. Nemohla být realizována bez předchozích zkušeností, které s největší pravděpodobností pocházejí z Mikulčic. rovin kamene, keramická produkce a i chronologická návaznost. To vše vypovídá o existenci komplexního systému v prostoru soutoku Dyje a Moravy ve druhé polovině 9. století.

Abstract:

The analysis of the early mediaeval fortification at Pohansko near Břeclav is based on the results of the researches which have been taking place since the year 1958. By now 19 small scale excavations of rests of fortification were completed. They provided extensive terrain documentation of various quality which caused various levels of interpretation possibilities. From the beginnings of surveys the model of construction of fortification was continuously created. Outcoming results were later validated by following excavations and published as well. Complex processing of terrain data mentioned above was not realized because of great extensitivity and difficulty of terrain situation. Standard fortification archaeological survey was 5 m wide, whilst whole parameter of fortification is 1,9 km long. It means that minimal part was explored. Modern IT technologies (databases, geographic information systems) allows us to combine and quickly process data of different kind and quality. That grants us spatialy identify basic construction features and eventually create new fortification model and reconstruct problems connected with built, preservation, defence and fortification end. The fortification was constructed on the plane original surface (younger subfosil horizon). It is compound from four main construction elements: base wooden grate, frontal stone wall, back wooden side, and the space between them was filled with soil and clay. All of these elements were connected together so the stability of the fortification was ensured. The fortification wide was 6,5 m and the height might have been up to 3 m without palisade on the top. Entrance to the top was secured by tunnels which were discovered at least at one (maybe at two) fortification excavation. The entrance into the fortificated area was provided by gates. Only the eastern one was discovered and excavated, there was also found iron part of gatedoor. The building material of the fortification was wood, earth and stone. The wood and the earth are to be found in the nearest surrounding of the site, the stone had to be imported from the distant area of Holič or Skalice. It supports the idea of high organization abilities of society which are shown in actual build-up of Pohansko and its fortification. The period of constructing of the fortification including transportation of raw materials due to strategical prespections could not take very long time. To astimate the time needed for construction is very difficult, generally from 1 to 6 years. The finding of palisade ditch under the wall the most probably prooves multi-phase build-up of the fortification. Suposingly the wall was at first constructed around the most endangered area and in the cause of insufficiency of time or raw material (or combination of both) was the part of the site fortificated at first with simple palisade. In the moment when it was possible to continue with the built-up of the wall, the palisade was destroyed and above its base ditch was built the final fortification. In this case is highly probable that the fortification was built during 2 or 3 years at maximum. Though the problem still dwells in exact dating of the build-up and the end of the fortification. On the basis of dendrochronological analysis of burnt wood from inner parts from the construction and build-up area which chronologically correspond with each other so the fortification was built after the year 881. The time of the end of the fortification is not still confidently solved, but we are sure that it was destroyed by the fire, but cause and exact time is still unknown. We assume that it had happened after the abolishement of the system which gave birth build-up of the hillfort at Pohansko. We can not say that the research of the fortification is completed. Abstract:

on in Pohansko near Břeclav was difficult and exacting process which was highly organized. The build-up was not realized without previous experiences which most probably originate from Mikulčice - the same type of the fortification, placing of the site, the same raw materiál and production of ceramics. All of these aspects show us that in the 9th century in the area of the confluence of the river Dyje and Morava existed real comprehensive system.
