Strategic planning of scandinavian libraries and their approach to sustainability

Abstract:

Tato práce rozebírá problematiku strategického plánování v knihovnách. Jejím účelem je obohatit jednotlivé kroky plánování o principy, jež napomohou zvýšit dynamičnost strategického plánu a umožní knihovnám flexibilně reagovat na rychle se měnící potřeby současné informační společnosti. Celý proces je v rámci kvalitativního výzkumu zasazen do kontextu knihoven Skandinávie, jimž se daří ukotvovat proces strategického plánování v kultuře celé organizace. Díky tomu mohou podporovat v zaměstnancích pocit sounáležitosti a schopnost strategicky uvažovat a stávat se součástí místní komunity skrze spolupráci s veřejností i s politiky. Směřují tak k udržitelnosti svých služeb i procesů a přispívají k budování demokratické společnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the issue of strategic planning in libraries. Its purpose is to enrich the stages of the planning process with principles that enhance the dynamism of strategic plans and enable libraries to respond flexibly to the rapidly changing needs of current information society. The entire process is, within the framework of qualitative research, set in the context of Scandinavian libraries, which have successfully embedded strategic planning into the organizational culture as a whole. As a result, they are able to foster a sense of ownership among staff members, strengthen their capacity for strategic thinking, and cultivate deeper connections with local communities through collaboration with both the public and politicians. In doing so, these libraries move toward sustainability of their services and internal processes and contribute to the development of a democratic society.
