The Language Analysis of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 111 in the Context of the Historical Development of the English Language

Abstract:

Tato práce je jazykovou analýzou Sonetu 111 od Williama Shakespeara. Abychom porozuměli jemným aspektům originální (Quarto) verze Sonetu, je nutné plně pochopit použité jazykové nástroje. Práce začíná stručnou charakteristikou Early Modern English a příslušným změnám, které proběhly v období zhruba 1485 – 1660. Důležitými faktory byly: rodící se jazykový standard založený na Londýnském idiomu, výpůjčky z latiny a rozšíření slovní zásoby. Výslovnost se měnila neustále během procesu jehož důležitou součástí byl jev zvaný The Great Vowel Shift. Další část práce se týká Williama Shakespeara, sonetové formy, Shakespearovi sbírky Sonetů a Shakespearova Sonetu 111. Shakespearův Sonet 111 je důkladně analyzován z hlediska fonetického (s rekonstrukcí originálního zvuku), ortografického, morfologického (s důrazem na předpony a přípony), syntaktického a sémantického. Vybrané gramatické jevy vztahující se k sonetu jsou pojednány samostatně. Stálá pozornost je věnována rozdílům mezi Early Modern English a současnou angličtinou. Shakespearův význam a jeho vliv na anglický jazyk jsou vyzdvihnuty v příslušných částech.

Abstract:

This thesis is a language analysis of William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 111. To understand the more delicate aspects of the original (Quarto) version of the Sonnet, it is necessary to comprehend the language instruments used therein. The thesis begins with a brief characteristic of Early Modern English and the pertinent changes that came about during the period, cc. 1485 – 1660. The important factors were the emerging language standard based on London speech, borrowings from Latin, and an increase in vocabulary. The pronunciation changed constantly in a complex process whose important part was a phenomenon known as The Great Vowel Shift. The next part relates to William Shakespeare, the sonnet form, Shakespeare’s Sonnets and Shakespeare’s Sonnet 111. Shakespeare’s Sonnet 111 is thoroughly analyzed: phonetically (with original sound reconstruction), orthographically, morphologically (with an emphasis on prefixes and suffixes), syntactically, and semantically. Selected grammatical phenomena relevant to the Sonnet were treated separately. Constant attention is paid to the differences between Early Modern English and Present Day English. Shakespeare’s importance and his influence on the English language are emphasized throughout the paper.
