Environmental sustainability in the context of the book industry in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce má za cíl zmapovat stav a projevy environmentální udrži-telnosti v současném tuzemském knižním průmyslu prostřednictvím prezentace životního cyklu knihy. V úvodu práce se věnujeme problematice udržitelnosti, klimatické změny, podobě současného kulturního a knižního průmyslu a výrobě knih. V hlavní části pak práce zachycuje environmentálně problematické oblasti, stejně jako pozitivní příklady z praxe a dostupné možnosti v papírenském a poly-grafickém průmyslu, stejně jako v nakladatelském a distribučním knižním odvětví. Z metodologického hlediska čerpá práce z rozhovorů se zástupci polygrafického a vydavatelského odvětví, doplněných dotazníkovým průzkumem mezi čtenáři. Závěrem práce téma diskutujeme také na úrovni české státní správy, stejně jako na úrovni Evropské unie. Záměrem diplomové práce je přispět k rozvoji tuzem-ské diskuse o environmentální udržitelnosti knižního průmyslu.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to map the status and features of environmental sus-tainability in the current domestic book industry by presenting the life cycle of a book. In the introduction, we discuss the issues of sustainability and climate change, the shape of the current cultural and book industry, and book produc-tion. In the main part, the thesis then captures environmentally problematic areas as well as positive practical examples and available opportunities in the paper and printing industry as well as in the book publishing and distribution sector. Methodologically, the thesis draws on interviews with representatives of the print-ing and publishing industry, supplemented by a questionnaire survey among readers. Finally, the thesis also discusses the topic at the level of the Czech state administration, as well as at the level of the European Union. The intention of the thesis is to contribute to the development of the domestic debate on the environ-mental sustainability of the book industry.
