Translation of Humor in Neil Gaiman's Work

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the translation of Culture-bound References (CRs) specifically in instances of humor in the work of Neil Gaiman. The aim of the thesis is to determine the effect of the strategies deployed by the translator on the structure of the humorous instances as well as the reproductuion of the humorous effect. The theoretical framework of the thesis is an expanded version of Attardo's General Theory of Verbal Humor which allows for comaparison of the ST and TT in terms of the structure of the humorous instance. Pedersen's typology of rendering strategies (from ST oriented to TT oriented) was used for the analysis of the corpus data. To determine the monoculturality and transculturality of the CRs among the relevant TT audience, a questionnaire was distributed among a relevant group of readers who were asked to assess each CR identified in the corpus and expess the level of their familiarity with it. The analysis revealed that the translator leans toward ST oriented strategies regardless of the TT audience's knowledge of the CR. It also indicates that the choice of rendering strategy, be it ST or TT oriented, does not effect the structure of the humorous instance. It does, however, influence the reproduction of the humorous effect in relation to the transculturality of the CR involved. In cases of monocultural CRs rendered using ST oriented strategies, the humorous effect may be significantly reduced.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá překladem kulturně ukotvených referencí v případech humoru v dílech Neila Gaimana. Cílem práce je určit, jaký efekt mají překladatelkou volené strategie na strukturu humoru a na reprodukci humorného efektu. Teoretický rámec práce zpočívá v rozšířené verzi Attardovy General Theory of Verbal Humor, která umožňuje porovnání struktury zvýchozího a cílového textu. K analýze dat korpusu byla dále využita Pedersenova typologie překladateských stragii (od strategií orientovaných na výchozí text k strategiím orientovaným na cílový text). K určení transkulturality či monokutturality jednotlivých kulturních referncí byl vytvořen dotazník. Ten byl dále poskytnut čtenářům, kteří vyjádřili, do jaké míry jsou s referencemi obeznámeni. Analýza ukázala, že překladatelka tíhne ke strategiím orientovaným na výchozí text bez ohledu na to, zda je s referencí cílový čtenář obeznámen nebo ne. Analýza dále naznačuje, že překladatelská strategie nemá vliv na strukturu humoru. Ovlivňuje ale reprodukci humorného efektu ve spojení s transkulturalitou či monokulturalitou dané reference. V případech humorných momentů obsahujících monokulturní refernce, které překladatelka přeložila pomocí strategií orientovaných na výchozí text může dojít k výraznému snížení humorného efektu.
