The Search for Authenticity in Immersive Theatre

Abstract:

Ve své práci Hledání autenticity v imerzivním divadle (Divadlo jako médium osobního tématu) se snažím reflektovat své zkušenosti v souborech na opačném konci spektra – v Národním divadle a v nezávislém souboru Pomezí. Cílem této práce pro mě bylo pojmenovat, co mají tyto dva rozdílné druhy divadla společného, a jít tak až k jádru divadla jako média. V první části práce vycházím z knihy Ireny Žantovské Divadlo jako komunikační médium. Pracuji s tezí, která definuje výjimečné postavení divadla mezi médii právě specifickou mírou a způsobem komunikace. Konkurenceschopnost, „živost“ a aktuálnost divadla jako média v současném zahlceném světě, stejně jako Žantovská, přikládám lidské potřebě kontaktu a transcendence. Právě proto se v práci věnuji fenoménu imerzivního divadla, který posouvá hranice komunikace a participace mezi tvůrci a divákem. Imerzivní divadlo zcela zásadně zviditelňuje základní princip komunikace, a tedy i divadla, sdílení. Proto je druhá, nejrozsáhlejší kapitola věnována právě jemu. Snažím se v ní vystihnout, jak rozdílná může být inscenace imerzivního divadla od inscenace tradiční, ale i to, jak využívá stejných principů a má podobné cíle. Jako modelový příklad používám inscenaci Pomezí stejnojmenného souboru. V druhé kapitole se věnuji také tématu autenticity, které mě provází už od začátku studia na DAMU. Nahlížím na autenticitu nejen jako na kvalitu hereckého projevu, ale také jako na ryzost, ve smyslu jedné z životních met. Téma autenticity mě přivedlo ke třetí kapitole, která nese název Osobní téma. V ní shrnuji, jakým způsobem mi divadlo jako médium umožňuje se projevit a jaké místo a funkci zaujímá v mém vnímání společnosti a hodnotovém žebříčku.

Abstract:

In my thesis The Search for Authenticity in Immersive Theatre (Theatre as a medium of personal topics) I am trying to reflect my experience as a member of two very different entities – in the National Theatre and in the independent theatre group Pomezí. The goal of this thesis is to describe, what these diverse types of theatre have in common, and to go to the core of theatre as a medium. In the first chapter, I draw inspiration from the book by Irena Žantovská called Theatre as a medium of communication. I work with the idea that defines the unique position of theatre in media through the specific amount and type of communication. I am convinced, that the competitiveness, „liveness” and topicality of theatre as a medium originates from the human need for contact and transcendence. Therefore, I focus on the phenomenon of immersive theatre, which redefines the boundaries of communication and participation between artists and audience members. Immersive theatre highlights the basic principle of communication and of theatre itself – sharing. That is why the second, most extensive chapter is dedicated to this topic. I´m trying to compare the differences between plays of immersive theatre and classical ones, but also their similarities in principles and goals. As a model subject, I use the project Pomezí made by the theatre group of the same name. In the second chapter, I focus also on the topic of authenticity, which followed throughout my studies at DAMU. I see authenticity not just as the quality of acting, but also as sincerity, which became one of my life goals. The topic of authenticity led me to the third chapter, which is called Personal topic. In this chapter, I summarize the ways in which theatre enables me to express myself and what place and function it holds in my perception of society and my personal values.
