Alternative projects to NATO

Abstract:

Konec druhé světové války rozdělil Evropu na čtyři sféry vlivu. Zatímco západní země poskytovaly podporu pro rekonstrukci zničené Evropy, Sovětský svaz začal šířit komunistickou ideologii a vliv. Spojené státy si nemohy dovolit zanechat Evropu osamocenou, protože bylo jasné, že kontinent nebyl schopen čelit sovětské hrozbě. Spojené státy přehodnotily svou zahraniční politiku, což umožnilo zapojení v Evropě a vytvoření kolektivně bezpečnostní aliance, známou jako Organizace Severoatlantické smlouvy. Během bipolárního konfliktu sloužilo NATO jako důkaz západní soudržnosti, která definovala sama sebe jako opozici vůči Sovětskému svazu a Varšavské smlouvě. Aliance přežila rozpad Sovětského svazu a stále je silným hráčem mezinárodního systému. I přesto se objevily se různé alternativy vůči existenci Aliance. Práce zkoumá tři různé projekty pro NATO. Navíc, esej popisuje vývoj Organizace Severoatlantické smlouvy z pohledu, který je relevantní pro vybrané alternativy. Vývoj je popsán v období od konce 40. let až do dneška, zatímco alternativní projekty jsou v podstatě spekulace o budoucí podobě Aliance. Bez ohledu na časovou rozdílnost se éry vzájemně doplňují. Cílem této práce je představit tyto alternativy, které byly vybrány po pečlivém zvážení. Tyto alternativy jsou NATO s Ruskem, globální aliance a svět bez NATO. Hlavním úkolem této práce je představit a analyzovat tyto alternativy. Empiricko-analytický přístup je základním kamenem pro druhou část práce, ve které jsou návrhy znovu analyzovány a porovnávány. Toto srovnání vede k hodnocení těchto alternativ a hodnotí pravděpodobnost realizace.

Abstract:

The end of World War II divided Europe into four spheres of influence. While Western countries were providing support for reconstruction of devastated Europe, the Soviet Union began to spread communist ideology and influence. The United States could not afford to leave Europe on its own, as it was clear that the continent was unable to manage Soviet threat. The United States reconsidered the foreign policy, which enabled to become engaged in Europe and create collective security alliance, known as The North Atlantic Treaty Organization. During the bipolar conflict, NATO served as a proof of Western cohesion that defined itself as an opposition to Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact. The Alliance survived dissolution of Soviet Union and is still going strong. Nevertheless, various alternatives to Alliance?s existence emerged. The thesis examines three alternative projects to NATO. Additionally, the essay discusses the development of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization from the point of view that is relevant to the selected alternatives. The development is described in the period from late 40s until today, while the alternative projects are basically speculations about future form of the Alliance. Notwithstanding these to eras complement each other. The aim of this thesis is to introduce these alternatives. These alternatives are NATO with Russia, global alliance and the world without NATO. The main tasks of this work are to introduce and analyse these alternatives. The empirical-analytical approach provides corner stones for the second part of the theses, in which the result are re-analysed and compared. This comparison leads to an assessment of these alternatives and evaluates the probability of realization.
