The Portrayal of Men in Margaret Atwood s Novels

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá zobrazením mužů ve třech románech Margaret Atwoodové: Žena k nakousnutí (The Edible Woman), Z hlubin (Surfacing) a Příběh Služebnice (The Handmaid's Tale). Mužské postavy jsou nejprve analyzovány podle toho, jak reflektují patriarchát, tedy jak zobrazují společnost s mužskou nadvládu a jak prezentují podřízené typy maskulinity. Zobrazení mužského těla a normativní standardy maskulinity jsou rovněž diskutovány. Dále jsou postavy mužů rozděleny podle toho, jaký stereotyp představují a jakou roli v románech zastávají. Určité vzorce postav se v textech opakují; některý postavy jsou jednoduché a přímočaré, jiné komplexnější. Ti nejsložitější a nejhůře zařaditelní muži jsou v příběhu mnohdy nejdůležitější.

Abstract:

This thesis discusses the portrayal of men in three novels by Margaret Atwood: The Edible Woman, Surfacing and The Handmaid's Tale. First, the male characters are analyzed in light of the theory of patriarchy, i.e. masculine dominance and the subversion thereof. The depiction of male body and the use of the normative standards in the novels are also addressed. Then, the characters are organized into repetitive patterns and examined according to the male gender stereotype – if any – they represent. Some of the characters are found to be rather straightforward, while others are unique and complex and come to play the most important role in the narrative.
