Strenghtening of the relation to the Czech language and national traditions in the Protectorate film

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá tematikou českého jazyka a národních tradic v protektorátním filmu. Po 15. březnu 1939 bylo všem tvůrcům českého filmu jasné, že stupňující se tlak německých okupačních úřadů se brzy projeví i ve filmu, a proto bude potřeba zamezit tomu, aby se český film nestal propagátorem ideologie třetí říše. Z tohoto nebezpečí vedla tehdy jediná cesta: volit tematiku co nejvzdálenější reálné přítomnosti, uchýlení se k únikovým látkám, příběhům z minulosti a adaptacím klasických děl. Přestaly se prosazovat náměty ze současného života, které přinášely nebezpečí kolaborace a nebezpečí zásahů ze strany německé cenzury. V rámci takové tematiky bylo možné i vyslyšet volání národa po vlastenecky zaměřených filmech. Tvůrcům se tak dařilo udržovat vztah k národním tradicím, čehož si všimly i německé bezpečnostní složky. Podle zpráv Sicherheitsdienstu natáčeli čeští režiséři filmy, ve kterých začali velmi zručně rozvíjet účinnou propagandu ve prospěch původní české národní kultury. V případech snímků Babička, To byl český muzikant nebo Tulák Macoun spatřovala služba Sicherheitsdienstu celkem správně školní příklady velkého mistrovství Čechů šikovným zinscenováním maskovat nepřátelské tendence tak, že to posiluje národní odpor, aniž je dán zjevný důvod k cenzurnímu zákroku. Již od vzniku samostatného Československého státu byla věnována pozornost správnosti českého jazyka ve filmu. V prvních letech protektorátu, kdy byla ve školách němčina upřednostněna před češtinou, tato pozornost ještě zesílila. Filmový poradní sbor požadoval, aby ke scénářům, které měl schválit, bylo přiloženo potvrzení, že byly přezkoušeny jazykovým znalcem. Později, když byl zřízen při Filmovém studiu sbor filmových lektorů, jazyková úroveň byla jedno z hledisek, které lektoři kontrolovali. To znamená, že scénář procházel trojí kontrolou ohledně jazykové čistoty, než se dostal do výroby. Byl revidován jazykovým znalcem, sborem filmových lektorů a nakonec členy FPS. Tímto způsobem se dařilo chránit čistotu jazyka alespoň ve scénářích. Protože však během realizace filmů docházelo k různým změnám, přidal FPS o několik let později jazykovým znalcům povinnost kontrolovat hotové filmy a jejich titulky.

Abstract:

The bachelor diploma thesis deals with the topic of the strengthening of the relation to the Czech language and national tradition in the Protectorate film. After March 15, 1939, it was clear to all Czech filmmakers that the escalating pressure of the German occupation authorities would soon be reflected in the film, and therefore it would be necessary to prevent the Czech film from becoming a promoter of the Third Reich's ideology. At that time, the only way out of this danger was to choose a theme most distant from the real present, to resort to past stories and adaptations of classical works. Themes of contemporary life have ceased to be promoted, as they were bringing the danger of collaboration and the risk of interference from German censorship. Even in such a theme, it was possible to hear the nation's calls for patriotic films. The creators thus managed to maintain their relationship with national traditions, which was also noticed by the German security forces. According to re-ports by Sicherheitsdienst, Czech directors have made films in which they very skillfully began to develop efficient propaganda for the benefit of the original Czech national culture. In cases such as Babička, To byl český muzikant or Tulák Macoun the Sicherheitsdienst quite rightfully perceived great mastership of Czech people to mask hostile tendencies by skillful staging in such a way that it strengthens national resistance without giving obvious reason for censorship Since the establishment of the independent Czechoslovak State, attention has been paid to the correctness of the Czech language in film. In the early years of the Protectorate, when German was preferred to Czech in schools, this attention became even stronger. The Film Advisory Board requested that the script should include a confirmation that it has been approved by a linguistic expert. Later, when the Film Lecturer Group was set up at the Film Studio, the lan-guage level was one of the aspects that the lecturers checked. This means that the script went through a triple check of language purity before it went into production. It was revised by a linguistic expert, the Film Lecturer Group and, finally, Film Advisory Board members. In this way, it was possible to protect the purity of the language at least in the scripts. However, as various changes took place during the implementation of the films, Film Advisory Board add-ed a few years later to the language experts the responsibility to check the finished films and their subtitles.
