Activities of Karel Berman in the Theresienstadt ghetto 1941–1945

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce se zaměřuje na českého operního pěvce, hudebního skladatele, libretistu, operního režiséra a překladatele Karla Bermana a na jeho činnost a tvorbu v terezínském ghettu, kde se v této těžké a násilné době ihned zapojil do kulturního života. Práce dále zmíní dvě osobnosti spjaté s Bermanem, a to Pavla Haase a Viktora Ullmanna, kteří byli tímto pěvcem inspirováni k další činnosti. Rovněž práce popisuje stručnou historii města Terezín, především tedy vznik a předpoklady vzniku ghetta. Také faktory, které vedly k rozvinutí uměleckých aktivit, kdy mezi nejdůležitější se řadí organizace, která dovolovala kulturní, umělecké a sportovní akce, tzv. Freizeitgestaltung.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis focuses on the Czech opera singer, music composer, librettist, opera director and translator Karel Berman and on his activities and work in the Theresienstadt ghetto, where he immediately participated in cultural life in a difficult and violent time. The work also mentions two personalities associated with Berman, namely Pavel Haas and Viktor Ullmann, who were inspired by this singer to continue their work. The work also describes a brief history of the city of Terezín, primarily the creation and prerequisites for the creation of the ghetto. Also the factors that led to the development of artistic activities, the most important being the organization that allowed cultural, artistic and sports events, the so-called Freizeitgestaltung.
