Gender correctness of selected texbooks aimed for primary and secondary schools

Abstract:

Má diplomová práce nese název „Genderová korektnost vybraných učebnic pro základní a střední školy“, z čehož vyplývá, že tématem mé práce je jednak objasnění problematiky genderu obecně se zaměřením se na vysvětlení pojmů jako genderové stereotypy, generické maskulinum, genderová socializace a teorie genderové identity, ale také se zabývám učebnicemi jako výchozím didaktickým materiálem a zdůrazňuji zde jejich důležitost ve vyučovacím procesu. Dále se věnuji jejich obecné charakterizaci s přihlédnutím na různorodost definic pojmu učebnice, jejím základním funkcím a prvkům struktury učebnice. A samozřejmě hlavní náplní mé práce, jak i z jejího názvu vyplývá, je objasnění oblasti genderové korektnosti učebnic a charakteristika kritérií, jež musí každá genderově korektní učebnice splňovat. Praktická část je tvořena analýzou čtyř učebnic (dvě učebnice občanské výchovy a dvě učebnice anglického jazyka), kde za pomocí poznatků získaných z teoretické části mé práce posuzuji míru jejich genderové korektnosti či stereotypnosti. Při analýze se nezaměřuji jen na výběr učiva a jeho prezentaci, ale také na projev ilustrací, příkladů a jazyka.

Abstract:

My diploma thesis is entitled “Gender correctness of selected textbooks aimed for primary and secondary schools”, which means that the issue of gender and clarification of terms like gender stereotypes, generic maskulinum, gender socialization and theories about the gender identity are one of my themes of this work. I am also concerned with textbooks as an initial didactic material where their importance in the educational process is emphasized. Next I deal with general characterization of textbooks taking into account variedness of their definitions, their basic functions and elements of their structure. And, of course, elucidation of the issue of gender correctness in textbooks and characterization of criteria, which each gender correct textbooks must contain, are the main topics of my work which follows from the name of the work itself. The practical part is constituted by analyses of four textbooks (two textbooks of Civics, and two textbooks of English language) where I, with the help of findings from the theoretical part, judge a degree of their gender correctness or incorrectness. During the analyses I do not only focus on a selection of the curriculum and its presentation, but also on a manifestation of illustrations, examples and language.
