Domestic negotiations of children's computer/internet uses

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá domácím vyjednáváním pravidel o užívání počítače a internetu. Cílem je porozumět tomuto procesu, který se odehrává mezi rodiči a dětmi v kontextu rodinné dynamiky a vzájemných vztahů. Záměrem je rozkrýt, zda pravidla v domácnostech existují, jakou mají povahu, proč vznikají, do jaké míry jsou dodržována a kontrolována. Práce vychází z konceptů každodennosti, domestikace médií či morální ekonomie domácnosti. Diskutována je rovněž sociální podmíněnost definice pojmu dětství spolu s praktickými důsledky, které tato skutečnost přináší. Data byla získána prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů, zatímco k analýze posloužily kódovací postupy zakotvené teorie. Hlavním výstupem výzkumu je trojdimenzionální typologie domácího vyjednávání pravidel, sestávající z benevolentní, konsensuální a restriktivní strategie. Tyto typy jsou definovány přítomností/absencí pěti znaků, které byly v rodinách identifikovány jako klíčové. Konkrétně se jedná o plnění povinností, explicitní souhlas rodičů, určování časového limitu, kontrola nad umístěním počítače a kontrola přístupu k uživatelským účtům. Volba konkrétní strategie se odvíjí od potřeby kontroly, kterou posiluje, nebo naopak utlumuje souhra následujících faktorů: obliba užívání počítače/internetu potomkem, vnímání rizika, vnímání dětí a styl výchovy.

Abstract:

The master‘s thesis deals with the domestic negotiations of computer/internet uses. The aim is to understand this process taking place among parents and children in the context of family dynamics and mutual relations. The purpose is to reveal whether rules exist in the households, what’s their nature, why they arise, to what extent they’re followed and controlled. The thesis works with the concepts of everyday life, media domestication and moral economy of the household. The issue of social determination of childhood definition is also discussed as well as practical results it brings. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews whereas coding procedures of grounded theory were used for analysis. The main research output is three-dimensional model of domestic negotiations of rules consisting of benevolent, consensual and restrictive strategy. These types are defined by presence/absence of five attributes which appeared to be crucial in the families. Specifically it is fulfilling duties, explicit permission with use, setting time limit, control over location of the computer and control over the access to user account. Selection of the strategy is derived from need for control which is strengthened or muted by coexistence of the following factors: popularity of computer/internet uses by child, risk perception, children perception and upbringing style.
