The concept of the soul and the afterlife in ancient Greece and Rome

Abstract:

Tématem mé bakalářské práce je Pojetí duše a posmrtného života ve starověkém Řecku a Římě. Text se dělí do dvou hlavních částí. V prvním bodě se věnuji pouze Řecku. Nejprve jsem se zaměřila na úvod do starověkého řeckého náboženství. Zde jsem zařadila kapitoly, ve kterých se zabývám například tím, co předcházelo vzniku světa, v němž žijí bohové. Dále zde nechybí ani kapitola věnovaná Diovy, vládci nebes. Pro zájemce nechybí ani některé zajímavosti o nejstarším božstvu. V další části jsou rozebraná některá známá pojetí o lidské duši. Určitě zde zájemci naleznou tezi: Platóna, Aristotela, Epicúra, stoicistickou a helenistickou. V následující kapitole se věnuji převážně pojetí posmrtného života. V textu tedy nechybí pasáže, v nichž se zabývám například Hádem, Cháronem, řekou Styx apod. Zkrátka jsou tady rozebrané představy o tom, jak by říše mrtvých měla vypadat. Určitě zde lze najít zajímavé informace o tom, co čeká duši na její cestě do podsvětí. Další část práce je věnovaná samotným pohřebním rituálů. Například se zde zabývám znečištěním smrti, právními předpisy, které se týkají pohřbů, pohřebními rituály a přípravě těla v období klasické éry. Také tu uvádím některé informace o průvodech a samotných obřadech. Od následující kapitoly se již začínám věnovat pouze Římu. V první části jsem se rozhodla rozebrat téma jejich pojetí duše. To se samozřejmě od toho řeckého liší. Římané věřili v duchy, které na ně neustále dávají pozor. Podle nich mohou tito duchové být i jejich předkové, a proto je řádně uctívají. Samozřejmě bych zde nemohla vynechat ani jejich pojetí posmrtného života. Ten je velice podobný tomu řeckému. Hlavním rozdílem jsou většinou jenom jména. Například Zeus je zde pojmenován Jupiter apod. V jedné části se opět věnuji pohřební praxí. Výsledek mé práce je takový, že představu o posmrtném životě mají obě náboženství společnou. Největší rozdíl je v jejich pojetí o duši, protože Římané je považují za duchy, které mají po svém boku během každodenního dne.

Abstract:

The theme of my bachelor thesis is The Concept of the Soul and the Afterlife in Ancient Greece and Rome. The text is divided into two main parts, with the first one covering Ancient Greece. I first focused on the introduction of ancient Greek religion. I have included chapters in which I deal, for example, with what preceded the creation of the world of gods. There is also a chapter devoted to Zeus, ruler of the heavens. In addition to this, I have included further information about the oldest deities. In the following section, I have explored a selection of familiar concepts about the human soul. I am sure those interested will find the concepts of Plato, Aristotle, Epicure, Stoicism and Hellenism of much interest. In the next chapter, I focused mostly on the concept of the afterlife. There are therefore passages in the text where I deal with Hades, for example as well as Charon, River Styx, etc. In short, I have explored the ideas and beliefs of what the realm of the dead should look like. I have also included additional information about what awaits the soul on its journey to the underworld. The next part of the work is devoted to the funeral rituals themselves. For example, I deal with the desecration by death, legislation on funerals, burial rituals and body preparation during the Classical Era. I have also provided information detailing parades and the ceremonies themselves. From the next chapter, I began focusing on Ancient Rome. In its first part, I have decided to discuss the subject of their concept of the soul. That, of course, is different from the Greek one. The Romans believed in ghosts who kept an eye on them. They believed that these spirits could also be their ancestors and their worship was therefore very important to them. Of course, I could not leave out their concept of the afterlife. It is very similar to the Greek one. The main difference is primarily in differing names. For example, Zeus is named Jupiter, etc. I also explore the funeral traditions. The resulting conclusion of my work is that the idea of the afterlife is shared by both religions. The biggest difference is in their conception of the soul, namely the fact that the Romans consider them to be the spirits which were by their side at all times.
