Multimodality of snowclone memes

Abstract:

The present thesis investigates two relatively new phenomena - multimodality and snowclone memes. Multimodality as a field of study has been developed in the past two decades, whereas snowclone memes (also known as image macro) began to spread not until 2007. Building on the theoretical assumptions, concerning semiotics, multimodality and intertextuality, a corpus of 105 snowclone memes has been compiled and explored to determine what role multimodality plays in memes and how it (and possibly other devices) influences the process of meaning-making. The key points of the analysis were recognition of the references included in the memes and identification of the relationships between images and texts.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá zkoumáním dvou poměrně nových fenoménů, a to multimodality a formulaicky tvořených memů. Multimodalita se jakožto obor rozvíjí poslední dvě desetiletí, zatímco formulaicky tvořené memy se začaly šířit až v roce 2007. Na základě teoretických předpokladů týkajících se sémiotiky, multimodality a intertextuality byl sestaven a analyzován korpus 105 formulaicky vytvořených memů, za účelem zjištění, jakou roli v memech multimodalita vlastně hraje a jak ovlivňuje proces tvorby významu, popř. zda jsou zde nějaké další nástroje ovlivňující tento proces. Klíčovými body analýzy bylo rozpoznání referencí obsažených v memech a určení vztahu mezi obrázkem a textem.
