Anisotropy of rocks deformed by high-speed rotary shearing

Abstract:

Náplní této bakalářské práce bylo změřit anizotropii magnetické susceptibility (AMS) na vzorcích deformovaných v přístroji Low-to-High Velocity Rotary Shear Friction Apparatus (LHVR). Tyto vzorky byly poskytnuty Taiwanskou National Central University. Jelikož byly tyto vzorky atypické svou velikostí a charakterem pro běžné měření AMS, bylo v první fázi nutné přijít s metodikou, která by spolehlivě anizotropii zachytila. Z výsledků anizotropie pak bylo cílem vyvodit zákonitosti, které by mohly být pro vzorky deformované metodou LHVR typické. Výsledky prokázaly i přes malou velikost vzorků, přítomnost anizotropie magnetické susceptibility, a jejich velmi nízké hodnoty susceptibility. Z AMS dat vyšla najevo spojitost mezi parametry magnetické susceptibility P (stupeň anizotropie), T (tvarový parametr) a Kmean (střední susceptibilita vzorku). Konkrétně vzorky s kladným tvarovým parametrem T (oblátní struktura) dosahovaly jak vysokých, tak nízkých hodnot P a Kmean. Zatímco vzorky se záporným tvarovým parametrem T (prolátní struktura) dosahovaly pouze hodnot nižších, jak v parametru P, tak i v Kmean. Dále bylo zjištěno, že tlak aplikovaný během procesu střihu v přístroji LHVR přímo ovlivnil výslednou strukturu vzorku. Čím větší tlak byl aplikován, tím více byla struktura oblátní. Ukázalo se také, že směry hlavních susceptibilit odpovídají deformaci jednoduchým střihem.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor's thesis was to measure the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) on samples sheared by Low-to-High Velocity Rotary Shear Friction Apparatus (LHVR). These samples were provided by the National Central University of Taiwan. The goal was to develop a suitable methodology for the accurate measurements of such atypical samples and subsequently acquire patterns from the results that could be typical for LHVR samples. Despite the small size of the samples and their very low susceptibility values, results demonstrated the presence of magnetic susceptibility anisotropy. The AMS data revealed a correlation between the magnetic susceptibility parameters P (degree of anisotropy), T (shape parameter), and Kmean (mean susceptibility). Samples with a positive shape parameter T (oblate structure) exhibited both high and low values of P and Kmean, whereas samples with a negative shape parameter T (prolate structure) showed only lower values for both P and Kmean. Normal stress applied during the LHVR shearing process also directly affected the inner structure of the samples. The more pressure applied, the more oblate the structure was. Furthermore, it was observed that the directions of the principal susceptibilities correspond to those by simple shear deformation.
