The Role of Small Breweries' Economic Aspects in the Regional Development: The Theory of Industrial Districts Approach

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na ekonomické aspekty malých pivovarů a jejich roli v regionálním rozvoji Plzeňského kraje se speciálním zaměřením na teorii výrobních okrsků. V teoretické části se nacházejí základní vymezení, definice, poznatky a stručná historie dané problematiky. Cílem diplomové práce je pomocí zkoumání vybraných ekonomických ukazatelů zjistit, jak malé vzájemně kooperující a prostorově blízké pivovarské podniky dosahují konkurenční výhody na regionální úrovni. Práce je případovou studií zaměřenou na konkrétní region v České republice, tedy na Plzeňský kraj. V práci byly položeny celkem 3 výzkumné otázky. Analytická část této práce je založena na kvantitativním zpracování ekonomických ukazatelů malých pivovarů, a především na kvalitativním výzkumu provedeném metodou semistandardizovaných rozhovorů se čtrnácti aktéry, kterými byli zástupci malých pivovarů v Plzeňském kraji. Pro účely této práce byl na začátku výzkumu sestaven dotazník a scénář otázek, který byl následně zpracován pomocí kvalitativních metod kódování, selektivní transkripce a hermeneutiky. Výzkum ukázal, že malé pivovary v Plzeňském kraji projevují určité charakteristiky, které jsou popsané v teorii výrobních okrsků. Vztahy mezi nimi jsou založené na důvěře a dochází k časté vzájemné spolupráci na různých úrovních. Mezi sebou se neberou jako konkurenti, ale spíše jako kolegové a kamarádi. Všechny navštívené malé pivovary jsou flexibilní vůči poptávce a nabízejí vysokou variabilitu svých produktů, u kterých kladou důraz na kvalitu a výjimečnost nikoliv na kvantitu. Aktéři též vykazují vysokou míru specializace.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis focuses on the economic aspects of small breweries and their role in the regional development of the Pilsen region with a special focus on the theory of industrial districts approach. In the theoretical part there are definitions, findings and a brief history of the issue. The aim of the thesis is to investigate selected economic indicators to find out how small mutually cooperating and spatially close brewery enterprises achieve competitive advantage at the regional level. The thesis is a case study focused on a specific region in the Czech Republic, i.e. the Pilsen region. The thesis askes a total of 3 research questions. The analytical part of this thesis is based on quantitative processing of economic indicators of small breweries, and above all on qualitative research conducted using the method of semi-standardized interviews with fourteen actors, who were representatives of small breweries in the Pilsen region. For the purpose of this work, a questionnaire and a scenario of questions were drawn up at the beginning of the research, which was subsequently processed using qualitative methods of coding, selective transcription and hermeneutics. The research has shown that small breweries in the Pilsen region exhibit certain characteristics described in the theory of production districts. Relationships between them are based on trust and there is frequent cooperation at different levels. They do not regard each other as competitors but rather as colleagues and friends. All the small breweries visited are flexible to demand and offer a high variability of their products, where the emphasis is on quality and uniqueness rather than quantity. The actors also show a high degree of specialization.
