Vicarious contact as a means of reducing prejudice against minorities

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je zjistit, zda metoda zprostředkovaného kontaktu skrze jednorázovou intervenci prostřednictvím videa zmírní předsudky vůči dvěma minoritám, Romům a Vietnamcům, u zkoumaných osob ve věku 18 až 25 let. Efekt videí jsme zjišťovali pomocí dotazníku INTERMIN, který jsme museli pro naše výzkumné účely mírně poupravit. Pro zjištění výsledků jsme vytvořili jeden dotazník, který byl použit mezi 3 skupiny z nichž jedna byla kontrolní, a zbylé dvě byly experimentálními skupinami. V dotazníku pro experimentální skupiny bylo navíc v každé z nich video, které mělo názory respondentů ovlivnit. Nejprve jsme zjišťovali, zda se díky intervenci v podobě zprostředkovaného kontaktu zmírnili předsudky vůči 8 stigmatizovaným menšinám skrze sekundární přenos. Tedy jestli došlo k přenesení pozitivních postojů i na jiné stigmatizované skupiny žijící v České republice. Následně jsme zjišťovali vliv intervence na míru sociální distance, meziskupinovou úzkost, míru důvěry, míru kontaktu a behaviorální intenci jak vůči romské menšině, tak i vůči vietnamské menšině. Výsledky prokázaly nepatrné zlepšení u některých menšin skrze sekundární přenos. U první experimentální skupiny se nám podařilo mírně zlepšit postoje vůči romské menšině a vůči německé menšině. Tyto výsledky však nebyli statisticky významně podloženy. Oproti tomu při porovnání kontrolní skupiny s druhou experimentální skupinou byla zjištěna statisticky významná změna ve vnímání homosexuálů. Dále jsme se zaměřovali pouze na romskou a vietnamskou menšinu. Zde jsme zjistili, že respondenti napříč všemi skupinami vykazují vyšší důvěru vůči vietnamské menšině než vůči romské menšině. Také jsme zjistili, že ženy vykazují horší behaviorální intenci vůči vietnamské menšině než muži. U mužů bylo také v rámci míry sociální distance zjištěno, že by lépe přijali Vietnamku za svou manželku než ženy Vietnamce. I přes všechna tato zjištění se nám ale nepodařilo prokázat, že by zprostředkovaný kontakt pomocí jednorázové intervence skrze video dokázal předsudky vůči romské a vietnamské menšině významně snížit. Toto zjištění následně reflektujeme v diskusi a limitech této práce.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to determine whether the method of vicarious contact through a one-time intervention through video alleviates prejudices against two minorities, Roma and Vietnamese, in the subjects aged 18 to 25 years. We determined the effect of the video using the INTERMIN questionnaire, which we chose to slightly modify for our research purposes. To find out the results, we created one questionnaire, which was divided into 3 groups, one of which was control group and the other two were experimental groups. In addition, there was a video in the questionnaire for experimental groups that influences the opinions of respondents. We first examined whether interventions in the form of vicarious contact alleviated prejudice against 8 stigmatized minorities through secondary transfer. That is, whether positive attitudes were transferred to other stigmatized groups living in the Czech Republic. Subsequently, we also verified the effect of the intervention on social distance, intergroup anxiety, intergroup trust, intergroup contact and behavioral intention towards the Roma minority and the Vietnamese minority. The results show a slight improvement in some minorities through secondary transfer. In the first experimental group, our attitudes towards the Roma minority and towards the German minority are gradually changing. However, these results were not statistically significantly substantiated. In contrast, when comparing the control group with the second experimental group, a statistically significant change in the perception of homosexuals was made. Furthemore, we focused only on the Rome and Vietnamese minorities. Here, we found that respondents across all groups showed greater confidence in the Vietnamese minority than in the Roma minority. We also found that woman show a worse behavioral intention towards the Vietnamese minority than men. For men, it was also treated as a measure of social distance that they better accept Vietnamese woman as their wives than woman. Despite all these findings, we find that we have not been able to prove that vicarious contact through a one-time video intervention significantly reduced prejudices against the Roma and Vietnamese minorities. We than reflect this finding in our discussions and in our limits in this work.
