Dealing with Software Development Technical Debt

Abstract:

Fenomén technického dlhu (TD) v posledných rokoch vzbudzuje stále väčší záujem, či už v akademickej sfére alebo priamo v IT spoločnostiach. Existuje vIacero metód na vyhodnotenie TD pre výskumné alebo komerčné účely. Napriek stúpajúcemu počtu týchto metód nie je stále jasné, ako sú efektívne pri odhaľovaní TD. Cieľom tejto práce je zistiť, či rôzne metódy na vyhodnotenie TD vykazujú podobné výsledky vývoja TD v čase. Pre tieto účely bolo otestovaných 17 open-source Python knižníc. V práci boli porovnávané nasledujúce metódy: Maintainability Index (MI), SIG modely a SonarQube. Porovnávania boli vykonané na viacerých typoch verzii (tzv. major, minor a micro release), ako aj na všetkých releasoch. Z analýzy bolo zistené že SIG a MI a taktiež SonarQube a SIG vykazujú medzi sebou podobné výsledky, na rozdiel od SonarQube a MI. Bez ohľadu na použitú metódu, alebo typ releasu bol v knižniciach pozorovaný nárast TD v čase. Táto práca je jedna z prvých, ktorá porovnáva viacero metód na vyhodnotenie TD, ako aj vývoj TD v open-source Python knižniciach. Môže byť použitá ako základ pre budúce štúdie zaoberajúcich sa metódami na vyhodnotenie TD a taktiež podrobnejšie skúmanie vývoja TD v open-source Python knižniciach.

Abstract:

In recent years, the Technical Debt (TD) phenomenon is gaining interest both in academia and industry. Multiple techniques to evaluate TD in the source code were developed for research purposes, as well as commercial use. With so many techniques emerging over time, it is still not clear how effective these techniques really are in detecting TD. The objectives of this thesis are to compare whether multiple TD evaluation techniques show the same trends of TD evolution and analyze TD evolution in time by means of the evaluated techniques on a set of 17 open source Python libraries. The techniques compared are the Maintainability Index (MI), SIG models and SonarQube. The comparisons were made on a different set of releases (major, minor, micro) separately, as well as on all releases. The study found that there is a correlation between SIG and MI, as well as SonarQube and SIG, while SonarQube and MI did not show similar results. It was also observed that TD tends to increase over time, regardless of the release type and TD evaluation technique used. This study is one of the first studies to compare multiple TD techniques, as well as the state of TD in Python open-source projects. It can be used as a base for future studies to compare additional techniques along with more extensive research on Python open-source libraries.
