Age as a dependent variable: Ideology of Age, ageism and ageing in Czech society

Abstract:

Text se zabývá otázkou ideologie věku, ageismu a věkové diskriminace jako rysů moderních společností. Ideologie věku je definována jako věková prominence a dominance chronologického věku v sociálních strukturách, vztazích i identitách. Ageismus je vymezen jako z této ideologie odvozené přesvědčení o kvalitativní nerovnosti fází životního cyklu manifestované v procesech stereotypizace a diskriminace osob a skupin na základě jejich věku a/nebo věkové příslušnosti. Věková diskriminace je behaviorální složkou takového přesvědčení či postoje. V textu tyto koncepty představujeme v kontextu modernizačního vývoje a změn, které přispěly ke zvýšení jejich sociálního významu. Empirická část, ve které jsou definované koncepty operacionalizovány, je založena na původní analýze datového souboru „Ageismus 2007“, který vznikl za podpory projektu Grantové Agentury ČR (grant č. 403/06/1647; www.ageismus.cz). Empirickou a teoretickou část jsme integrovali v typologizaci možných reakcí, které má seniorská populace k dispozici jako obranu proti ideologickým tlakům věku a ageismu.

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with age ideology, ageism and age discrimination as characteristic features of modern societies. Age ideology is defined as the age prominence and dominance of chronological age in social structures, relationships as well as identities. In terms of a definition ageism derives from this ideology the conviction that stages in the life cycle are qualitatively unequal and manifests itself in processes of stereotypization and discrimination against individuals and groups on the basis of their age and/or membership of an age group. Age discrimination is then the behavioural component of such a conviction or approach. In the dissertation the concepts are discussed in the context of modernizing developments and changes which contributed to their increased social significance. The empirical part is based on the original analysis of the “Ageism 2007” data file which was constructed with the help of the Czech Science Foundation (grant no. 403/06/1647; www.ageismus.cz).The empirical and theoretical parts are integrated in the typology of possible reactions that the senior population has at its disposal as defence against the ideological pressures of age and ageism.
