Club of democracy of postmodern places of consumption: How the owners think about their cafes.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce mapuje současné pole brněnských kaváren s využitím teorie kapitálů francouzského sociologa Pierra Bourdieu. Prostřednictvím objemu a rozložení ekonomického a kulturního kapitálu zkoumaných kaváren, respektive jejich majitelů či provozovatelů, usiluje o nalezení mechanismů reprodukce tohoto pole. Zároveň sleduje genealogii kavárny od jejich institucionalizace v evropském kontextu až k postmodernímu sociologicky interpretačnímu rámci současné městské kavárny. Práce klade důraz na vliv evropské kavárenské tradice a vynalézání tradic nových, jež se objevují v současných trendech brněnského kavárenství. Přístup, který reflektuje měnící se význam kavárny jako instituce v rámci městského veřejného prostoru, usiluje o vytvoření typologie kaváren na základě kategorií užívaných samotnými aktéry – majiteli kaváren. Kvalitativní výzkum kavárenského pole je založen na polostrukturovaných rozhovorech s jednotlivými majiteli kaváren, z nichž je vyvozen význam sociálního a kulturního kapitálu jako volba úspěšné strategie v boji o kapitál symbolický – tedy o všeobecné uznání a ocenění kavárny a konkrétní postavy kavárníka v poli vznikajících a zanikajících brněnských kaváren. A to jak ze strany zainteresované veřejnosti, tak ze strany aktérů, jež zaujímají pozici v daném poli.

Abstract:

The thesis maps current field of cafés in Brno using the theory of capitals of french sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Through the possessed volume and distribution of economic and cultural capital of researched cafés, it works towards establishing the mechanisms of reproduction of this field. At the same time, the dissertation follows the genealogy of café from the time of its institutionalisation within european historical context right to postmodern frame of sociological interpretation of contemporary urban café. Further the thesis focuses on influence of european café tradition and the invention of new traditions appearing within current trends of café manners in Brno. The approach reflecting changing meanings of café as institution in the frame of urban public space aims at setting up café typology through the categories used by agents – the café owners. The qualitative research of café field is based on semi-structured interviews conducted with every single chosen café owner, from those a high significance of social and cultural capital as a choice of the successful strategy in struggle for symbolic capital is inferred, so that café with its owner are going to reach a general recognition and appriciation within the field of emerging and disappearing cafés in Brno.
