Relationship of Personality Characteristics, Value Orientations and Gender Differences to Acculturation in Czech Vietnamese

Abstract:

Akulturace je proces, v jehož průběhu se vlivem soustavného kontaktu s jinou kulturou mění chování, vnímání, prožívání a postupně i identita jedince. Tato práce se zaměřuje na akulturaci českých Vietnamců, kteří v České republice představují třetí nejpočetnější menšinu, nicméně psychologický výzkum jejich akulturace je značně omezený. Cílem práce je popsat vztahy mezi osobnostními charakteristikami, hodnotovými orientacemi, rodovými rozdíly a mírou akulturace. V teoretické části práce představuji zkoumané konstrukty a jejich vzájemné vztahy. Samostatná kapitola je věnována přiblížení vietnamské kultury a aspektům života Vietnamců v České republice. V empirické části jsou na vzorku 456 českých Vietnamců první, jedenapůlté a druhé generace ověřovány vztahy mezi osobnostními charakteristikami, hodnotovými orientacemi, rodovými rozdíly a mírou akulturace. Z osobnostních charakteristik vykazují kladný vztah k akulturaci extraverze, přívětivost, svědomitost a otevřenost vůči nové zkušenosti. Hodnotové orientace korelují s akulturací méně výrazně, kladný vztah k akulturaci má pouze hodnota úspěch, naopak hodnota konzervatismus koreluje s akulturací negativně. Dále jsou přiblíženy vztahy osobnostních charakteristik a hodnotových orientací s vietnamskou kulturní orientací, jsou ověřovány změny v individualistických a kolektivistických hodnotách ve vztahu k akulturaci a hodnoty Vietnamců různých generací jsou porovnány s českou normou. Výzkum dále porovnává míru akulturace u mužů a žen, nicméně pro náš vzorek zde nebyly zjištěny statisticky významné rozdíly.

Abstract:

Acculturation is a process which changes behavior, perceptions, emotions and over time also identity of the individual under influence of continuous contact with another culture. This work focuses on acculturation of Czech Vietnamese who represent the third largest minority in the Czech Republic, but yet, psychological research of their acculturation is very limited. The aim of this work is to describe links between personality traits, value orientations, gender differences and degree of acculturation. The theoretical part presents the examined constructs and their mutual relations. There is a separate chapter dealing with a presentation of the Vietnamese culture and aspects of life of Vietnamese in the Czech Republic. In the empirical part the relationships between personality traits, value orientations, gender differences and degree of acculturation are being researched on a sample of 456 Czech Vietnamese of the first, one-and-a-half and second generation. Personal characteristics exhibiting a positive attitude toward acculturation are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness to new experiences. Value orientations correlate with acculturation substantially less, success is the only one to show positive attitude towards acculturation, while conservation correlates with acculturation negatively. Furthermore, we decribe the relations of personality characteristics and value orientations with Vietnamese cultural orientation, verify changes in individualistic and collectivist values in relation to acculturation and compare Vietnamese values of different generations with the Czech values. The research also compares the degree of acculturation in men and women, but as for our sample there were no statistically significant differences.
