Cézanne´s Apples: Black and White Reproduction

Abstract:

Pro svoji závěrečnou teoretickou práci jsem zvolil téma spojené s možnostmi užití černobílé fotografické reprodukce v současné umnělecké praxi. Můj celkový záměr je popsat tuto problematiku nejen pomocí literatury a informací vztahujících se k tomuto tématu, ale demonstrovat ji na konkrétním příkladu díla a s ním spojené průmyslové reprodukce-post impresionistického malíře a otce moderního umění Paula Cézanna. Jako prvotní motivace a inspirace pro výběr tohoto tématu mi posloužila nejenom moje vlastní zkušenost s častou nemožností věrné reprodukce barev ale především její obecná nemožnost zrcadlící se v příkladu výstavy Antonise Pittase. Situace takto se vztahující k bezvýchodnosti černobílé reprodukce ovšem může nastat i v případě takovém, že samotné dílo svoji barevnou škálou reprodukci provedenou v barvě ze své podstaty neumožňuje. Příkladem na kterém lze tuto situaci popsat nám může být výstavní projekt Antonise Pittase ve vídeňské galerii Significant Other obsahující stěnu z reflektivního materiálu, který nemůže být pomocí fotografie věrně zdokumentován a to především z důvodu technické podstaty samotného díla. Kdybychom jako autoři fotodokumentace chtěli stěnu vyfotografovat při reflexi světla, omezili bychom tak použitím zábleskové jednotky světlo ve zbytku místnosti a vyvolali tak možná zcela nechtěný dojem a nesjednocené vyznění fotodokumentace. V takovém případě, pevně věřím, může černobílá reprodukce uměleckého díla najít své komplexní využití, stát se koncepčním řešením, přímo reagujícím na samotné dílo. Reflexní ale například i výrazné barvy mimo barevný prostor tiskárny která bude následně vizuální materiál (publikovanou fotodokumentaci díla, či výstavy) reprodukovat, často vytvářejí podobný problém ale opět v trochu jiném úhlu pohledu, či směru uvažování. Je-li výstupem umělecké instalace především její fotodokumentace, publikovaná prostřednictvím online magazínů pravidelně zveřejňující světové dění umělecké sféry, odpovídající barevnost může být docílena jen samotnou skutečností, že divák konzumuje obrazový materiál prostřednictvím displeje nebo obrazovky, dovolující zobrazení širokého barevného spektra. Realita a věrnost barev může a zpravidla dokonce bívá upravena nad rámec zdrojových dat z fotoaparátu, tak aby odpovídala víc než prostému výsledku fotoaparátu, spíš divácké zkušenosti a celkovému dojmu. V případě, že je fotodokumentace výstavy publikována skrze katalog, či jinou tištěnou publikaci, dostává se umělecké dílo opět do složité situace v rámci své reprodukce. Obsahuje li dílo byť jen malou část charakterizovanou specifickou barevností, mimo schopnost reprodukce barevnosti CMYK, či RGB, je logicky v rámci věrnosti samotné reprodukce tuto barvu/barvy použít jako doplňkové tiskové barvy. Za situace kdy dílo či výstava obsahuje takových specifických barev větší množství, stává se takové řešení nepoužitelným. Nastává ale situace kdy na světlo přirozeně přichází ona možnost černobílé reprodukce. Omezené fotografie, dovolující ale míru imaginace potřebné k alternativnímu vjemu takovéto fotodokumentace.

Abstract:

For my final theoretical work I selected a topic related to the possibilities of using black and white photographic reproduction in contemporary artistic practice. My overall intention is to describe this issue not only with the help of literature and information related to this topic, but to demonstrate it with the concrete example of the work and the associated industrial reproductions of post impressionist painter and father of modern art Paul Cézanne. As a inspiration came my own experience with the frequent impossibility of true colour reproduction, but above all its general impossibility mirrored in the example of the exhibition of Antonis Pittas, served as the primary motivation and inspiration for the choice of this topic. The situation thus relating to the impossibility of black and white reproduction can, of course, also arise in the case that the work itself, by its colour scale, does not inherently allow reproduction in colour. An example of this situation can be found in Antonis Pittas's exhibition project at the Significant Other gallery in Vienna, which includes a wall made of reflective material that cannot be truly documented by using photography, primarily because of the technical nature of the work itself. If we, as the authors of the photographic documentation, had wanted to photograph the wall with the light reflecting off it, we would have limited the light in the rest of the room by using a flash unit, thus creating a perhaps completely unwanted impression and a disjointed feel to the photographic documentation. In such a case, I firmly believe, a black and white reproduction of an artwork can find its complex use, becoming a conceptual solution directly responding to the work itself. Reflective, but also, for example, bold colours outside the colour space of the printer who will subsequently reproduce the visual material (published photo documentation of the work or exhibition), often creates a similar problem, but again from a slightly different point of view or direction of thinking. If the output of an art installation is primarily its photodocumentation, published through online magazines regularly publishing the world events of the art sphere, the corresponding colour can only be achieved by the mere fact that the viewer consumes the visual material through a display or screen, allowing the display of a wide colour spectrum. The reality and fidelity of the colours can, and usually even is, adjusted beyond the camera source data to match the viewer's experience and overall impression rather than the simple camera result. When the photographic documentation of an exhibition is published through a catalogue or other printed publication, the artwork is again placed in a difficult situation in its reproduction. If the work contains even a small part characterised by a specific colour, beyond the ability to reproduce CMYK or RGB colours, it is logical to use these colour(s) as complementary print colours within the fidelity of the reproduction itself. In situations where the work or exhibition contains a large number of such specific colours, such a solution becomes unworkable. However, there is a situation where the possibility of black and white reproduction naturally comes to light. Limited photographs, but allowing for the degree of imagination needed for an alternative perception of such photodocumentation.
