Working Students and Burnout Syndrome: The Impact of COVID-19

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vztahem mezi zvládáním digitální komunikace (ve smyslu organizace času a plánování) a syndromem vyhoření u pracujících studentů vysokých škol, přičemž syndrom vyhoření je zkoumán z hlediska jeho dimenzí definovaných MBI. Vztah je zkoumán z důvodu nárůstu rozsahu využívání digitální komunikace kvůli příchodu pandemie COVID-19, přičemž jsou to právě pracující studenti, kteří se musí vypořádat s množstvím digitální komunikace plynoucí z mnoha zdrojů. Významný pokles ve využívání digitálních komunikačních prostředků předpokládat nelze a pouze taková osoba, která syndromem vyhoření není ohrožena, může odpovědně a kvalitně vykonávat veškeré činnosti směřující k tomu, aby byla úspěšná nejen ona sama, ale také posouvala kupředu celou organizaci či instituci, ve které působí. Díky prozkoumání zmíněného vztahu je pak možno přijmout preventivní opatření s potenciálem vzniku syndromu vyhoření zamezit. Pracující studenti z Vysoké školy ekonomické v Praze se stali výběrovým souborem pro konaný výzkum, který proběhl kvantitativní i kvalitativní formou. Statisticky nejvýznamnější vztah byl poté prokázán mezi schopností zvládat digitální komunikaci a dimenzí syndromu vyhoření zvanou depersonalizace. Statisticky významný vztah panuje také pro zvládání digitální komunikace a dimenzi osobního uspokojení z práce, dále pro emocionální vyčerpání již existence vztahu prokázána nebyla. Ukázalo se, že digitální komunikace se do plánování a organizace času přímo a vědomě nepromítá, nicméně schopnost jí ovládat a určit, jakým způsobem bude do různých aspektů života zasahovat, je zásadní.

Abstract:

The thesis concerns the relationship between managing the digital communication (in terms of time organization and planning) and burnout syndrome in working university students, where burnout syndrome consists of dimensions defined by MBI. The relationship is being explored because of the increase in using the digital communication due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the working students who must deal with the amount of digital communication from many sources. A significant decrease in the use of means of digital communication cannot be expected and only such a person who is not endangered by the burnout syndrome can responsibly and efficiently perform all activities to be successful not only himself but also to move forward the entire organization or institution in which he operates. By examining mentioned relationship, it will be possible to take correct measures with a potential to prevent the onset of burnout syndrome. Working students from the Prague University of Economics and Business were chosen for the sample. The research was carried out in quantitative and qualitative form. The statistically most significant relationship was demonstrated between the ability to manage the digital communication and the dimension of the burnout syndrome called depersonalization. There is also a statistically significant relationship for the managing the digital communication and the dimension of personal accomplishment, but the existence of the relationship has not been proved for the emotional exhaustion. Furthermore, digital communication is not directly and consciously reflected in planning, but the ability to control it and determine how much it affects various aspects of life has proved as essential.
