This diploma thesis is dedicated to the gaucho theme in the work of J. L. Borges. The first part introduces the character of the real gaucho, who became a model, a prototype, for the literary gaucho, which is presented in detail in chapter two through the most famous Argentinian works preceding the works of Borges.
