Indigenous knowledge and sustainable agriculture

Abstract:

Předmětem této práce je přiblížení a vysvětlení pojmu indigenous knowledge, což by mělo vést k lepšímu pochopení jeho funkce v tradičním zemědělství. Tradiční zemědělství, které z velké části využívá právě indigenous knowledge, je typické pro řadu tzv. původních národů a velmi často jej můžeme označit za trvale udržitelné. Co je podstatou udržitelného zemědělství a jaké jsou jeho základní principy, to je předmětem další části této práce. V té jsem se zaměřila na tři hlavní pilíře, které jsou často uváděny v literatuře: environmentální, ekonomický a sociální, a které tvoří podstatu udržitelného zemědělství. Dalším důležitým předmětem práce je analýza balijské kultury a pro ní typického pěstování rýže v kontextu indigenous knowledge a trvalé udržitelnosti. Díky analýze, kterou jsem provedla na základě vlastního pozorování a na základě četby vybrané literatury, jsem následně zhodnotila, že balijská kultura svými rysy odpovídá charakteristice původních národů a její tradiční způsob pěstování rýže je trvale udržitelný. Ačkoliv pochází myšlenka trvale udržitelného zemědělství převážně ze západní kultury a tomu odpovídají i její principy, dospívám v práci k názoru, že tradiční zemědělství původních národů lze označit za rovnocennou součást udržitelného zemědělství. A to i přes to, že má určité odlišné rysy, díky nimž bývá v některých případech nedoceněné.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is a focus on and an explanation of the idiom indigenous knowledge, leading to a better understanding of its function in traditional agriculture. Traditional agriculture, which widely uses indigenous knowledge, is typical of many indigenous nations and can very often be identified as sustainable. The foundations and basic principles of sustainable agriculture are the subject of the next part of the thesis, in which I focus on three pillars of sustainability often mentioned in the literature: environmental, economic and social. Another important subject of this thesis is an analysis of Balinese culture and its rice growing practices in the context of indigenous knowledge and sustainability, based on my own observations supported by literature research. On the basis of this analysis, I conclude that Balinese culture can be characterized as an indigenous culture and that its traditional rice growing practices are sustainable. Although the idea of sustainable agriculture and its principles are derived from a Western tradition, I conclude that the traditional agriculture of indigenous nations can stand as an equal part of sustainable agriculture. Even if it is underestimated in some cases because of its different approaches and features.
