Homesickness and ways of coping with its experience among foreigners living in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá tématem homesickness u expatriantů žijících v České republice. Cílem práce je popsat, jakým způsobem expatrianti prožívají stesk po domově, jaké strategie obvykle volí pro jeho zmírňování a co ho nejvíce ovlivňuje. Pro získání dat jsou použita polostrukturovaná interview se 4 participanty - 2 ženy a 2 muži. Pro analýzu a interpretaci dat je volena metoda IPA. Výsledky ukazují, že projevem homesickness je nejčastěji smutek, depresivní naladění a pocity samoty. Tyto prožitky nejčastěji dokážou zmírnit hovory s rodinou a blízkými. Z dlouhodobého hlediska nejvíce pomáhají návštěvy domoviny. Dalšími volenými strategiemi je pozitivní myšlení nebo udržování kontaktu se svou kulturou a mateřským jazykem. Významný vliv na homesickness mají sociální sítě, které následně vyvolávají v jedincích FOMO. Druhým faktorem je počasí, kdy se stesk obvykle zintenzivňuje během krátkých zimních dnů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the topic of homesickness among expatriates living in the Czech Republic. The aim of the thesis is to describe how expatriates experience homesickness, what strategies they usually choose to alleviate it and what influences it the most. Semi-structured interviews with 4 participants - 2 women and 2 men - are used to collect data. The IPA method is chosen for data analysis and interpretation. The results show that the manifestation of homesickness is most often sadness, depressive mood and feelings of loneliness. These experiences can most often be alleviated by conversations with family and loved ones. In the long term, visits to the home are most helpful. Other strategies chosen are positive thinking or keeping in touch with one's culture and mother tongue. Social networks have a significant impact on homesickness, which in turn triggers FOMO in individuals. The second factor is the weather, with homesickness usually intensifying during the short days of winter.
