Brexit: The Power Status of Great Britain After EU Exit

Abstract:

Racionálně jednající státy usilují v mezinárodních vztazích o získání a následné udržení moci, která charakterizuje jejich mocenské postavení. Výjimkou není ani proces odchodu Británie z EU, který reprezentuje snahy o posílení britské národní moci. Primárním cílem této diplomové práce je identifikovat změny v mocenském postavení na případové studii Velké Británie v průběhu probíhajícího procesu Brexitu na základě analýzy primárních zdrojů a sekundárních dokumentů, zabývajících se otázkou Brexitu a postavením Velké Británie na mezinárodním poli. Jelikož je pojem „moc“ tradičně spojován s realistickou teorií mezinárodních vztahů, sekundární cíl práce je poté vyhodnotit tuto změnu mocenského postavení v rámci realistického pojetí. Ze závěrů vyplývá, že se mocenské postavení Británie v jednotlivých složkách moci na základě sledování trendů nezměnilo, tedy Brexit neměl na polickou moc Británie zásadní vliv. Británii se tak otevírají nové výzvy a příležitosti při formování svého pokračujícího mocenského postavení na evropské i mezinárodní scéně.

Abstract:

In international relations, rationally acting states pursue the acquisition and further preservation of power that characterises their power status. The process of Britain leaving the EU is not an exemption as it represents an interest to strengthen Britain’s national power. The main goal of this thesis is to identify changes in the power status on a case study of Great Britain during the Brexit process on the basis of analysing primary sources and secondary documents that deal with the Brexit question and status of Great Britain in the international sphere. As the term of power is traditionally linked to the realistic theory of international relations, the secondary goal of the thesis is to evaluate the changes of power status from the perspective of classical realism. From the conclusions, we can find out that Britain’s power status in individual dimensions of power has not changed based on analysed trends, and thus Brexit has not significantly influenced British political power. Consequently, new challenges and opportunities are opening for Britain in forming its continuous power status on both European and international scenes.
