Northern Lights by Philip Pullman: Developing Creative Thinking Skills in Lower Secondary ESL Classroom through Literature-Based Activities

Abstract:

Tato závěrečná práce se zaměřuje na začlenění literárně založených aktivit s cílem rozvinout kreativní myšlení žáků ve výuce anglického jazyka na druhém stupni základních škol. Jejím hlavním cílem je zmapovat současný pohled na kreativitu, zejména v oblasti vzdělávání, a prozkoumat potenciál knihy Philip Pullmana Zlatý kompas. Práce se skládá jak z teoretické, tak z empirické části. Teoretická část se zabývá konceptem kreativity a kreativního myšlení a je zaměřena na jeho pozici ve dnešním vzdělávání a dále pojednává o čtení v souvislosti s kreativitou. Empirická část se zaměřuje na propojení teoretických poznatků s praktickou implementací navržených aktivit testovaných na ZŠ a MŠ Sluníčko, s.r.o. Práce představuje hlavní benefity rozvoje kreativity a nabízí praktické přístupy k jejímu integrování do učitelské praxe. Navržené aktivity a nástroj pro sebehodnocení mohou sloužit jako zdroj inspirace pro učitele angličtiny.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on incorporating literature-based activities in lower-secondary ESL classrooms with a focus on developing pupils‘ creative thinking skills. Its primary aim is to map the current view on creativity, especially in education, and investigate the potential of Northern Lights by Philip Pullman. The thesis consists of both a theoretical and an empirical part. The theoretical part deals with the con-cept of creativity and creative thinking and is focused on its position in today’s education. Furthermore, it discusses the benefits of reading and its connections to creativity. The empirical part concentrates on connecting the theoretical knowledge with the practical implementation of designed activities piloted in ZŠ and MŠ Sluníčko, s.r.o. The thesis outlines the advantages of fostering creativity and offers practical approaches to integrating creative thinking skills into teachers' day-to-day work. The suggested activities and the self-assessment tool can serve as a source of inspiration for the teachers of English.
