The Image of Religious Life of Tatars in Russian Medieval Sources

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá analýzou, jak vybrané ruské středověké prameny popisují Mongoly a jejich náboženský život, tedy tradice, zvyky a rituály, se kterými byla ruská společnost konfrontována během mongolského vpádu, ke kterému došlo v polovině 13. století. Vybrané části pramenů jsem podrobila diskurzivní analýze ve smyslu Jamese Paula Geeho a pokusila se zodpovědět na následující otázky. Jaké mongolské tradice a rituály považují letopisci za důležité a jak je popisují, jaké děje jsou s Mongoly spojené a jsou-li jejich náboženské zvyky pro letopisce přijatelné. Dále bylo mou snahou zjistit, jestli se v pramenech vyskytují zmínky o tom, zda se ruská knížata byla nucena vzdát své víry a jaké vztahy vládly mezi mongolskými chány a knížaty, potažmo mezi pravoslavnou církví a chány. Celá práce je založena na interpretaci vybraných pramenů, především tří ruských letopisů (Novgorodského, Ipatijevského a Lavrentinského) a klade si za cíl pochopit, jaké faktory měly vliv na popis Mongolů a jejich náboženského života.

Abstract:

This thesis deals how selected medieval Russian sources describe the Mongols and their religious life, i.e. their traditions, customs and rituals in period of time the Mongol invasion of Rus´ (in the early 13rd century). Selected parts of the sources were analyzed via discoursive analysis by James Paul Gee to try to answer following questions: what kind of traditions and rituals chroniclers (bookmen) considered as important and how they describe them, what occurances are connected with the Mongols, wheather the religious customs of the Mongols are acceptable for the chroniclers, how the chroniclers describe the Mongols and with whom are they compared. Furthermore, I wanted to find out whether there are any references if Russian princes were forced to renounce their faith, and what kind of relationships existed between Mongol khans and russian princes, consequently between the Orthodox Church and the khans. The whole work is based on the interpretation of selected sources, especially three Russian chronicles (letopises) (The Hypatian Codex, The Laurentian Chronicle and The Chronicle of Novgorod) with the aim of understanding what factors influenced of the description of Mongols and their religious life.
